n4patch loader
Description
n4patch Loader: Installing Mods for Need for Speed: High Stakes
n4patch is a modular patching system for Need for Speed: High Stakes (NFS4). It allows you to install gameplay improvements, new features, and bug fixes without modifying the game's executable file.
Instead of permanently changing nfs4.exe, the loader applies patches directly to the game's memory when it starts.
This makes installing, updating, and removing individual mods much easier.
How It Works
The n4patch loader starts automatically when you launch NFS4.
It loads .n4p modules from the patches
folder, checks their compatibility, detects conflicting modifications,
and applies compatible patches before the game begins running.
Each feature can be distributed as a separate module, so you can choose which modifications to enable.
Key advantages:
- No EXE modification: Your
nfs4.exeremains unchanged on disk. - Modular installation: Enable or disable features by adding or removing
.n4pfiles. - Compatibility checks: The loader checks whether patches match your game executable.
- Conflict detection: Incompatible patches that attempt to modify the same code are detected.
- Alternative loaders: Five DLL options are available to help avoid conflicts with existing graphics wrappers and other mods.
- Logging: The loader records its activity in
n4patch.log.
Installation
Step 1: Prepare Your Game
Make sure Need for Speed: High Stakes is installed and working correctly.
The current n4patch modules target the supported NFS4 executable based on version 4.5 with the VEG patch.
Step 2: Install the Loader
Copy one loader DLL into the folder containing nfs4.exe.
For most users, the recommended option is:
version.dll
Your game folder should look similar to this:
NFS4/
nfs4.exe
version.dll
patches/
Instead, use one of the alternative loaders supplied with n4patch.
| Loader | Recommended use |
|---|---|
version.dll |
Default option for most installations |
ddraw.dll |
Recommended when version.dll is already in use |
winmm.dll |
Alternative when both previous DLL names are occupied |
dinput.dll |
Alternative for installations using other wrappers |
wsock32.dll |
Additional fallback option |
All five loaders provide the same functionality. Only the DLL filename and the Windows system library being proxied are different.
Use only one n4patch loader DLL per installation.
Step 3: Download n4patch
Download the latest package from:
Extract the archive.
Step 4: Install Patch Modules
Create a folder named patches inside your game directory if it does not already exist.
Copy the .n4p modules you want to use into that folder.
For example:
NFS4/
nfs4.exe
version.dll
patches/
tournament16.n4p
career_selection.n4p
custom_career.n4p
race_again.n4p
replayview.n4p
Only install modules that are available in your downloaded package and compatible with your loader version.
Step 5: Start the Game
Launch nfs4.exe normally.
The loader will automatically scan the patches folder and apply compatible modules.
There is no separate launcher or additional program to run.
After starting the game, a file named n4patch.log will be created in the game directory.
You can inspect this file to see which patches were loaded successfully and whether any compatibility problems were detected.
Enabling and Disabling Mods
One of the main advantages of n4patch is that individual modifications can be managed independently.
To enable a mod: Copy its .n4p file into the patches folder.
To disable a mod: Remove its .n4p file from the folder, or move it somewhere else.
To update a mod: Replace its .n4p file with a newer compatible version.
Restart the game after making changes.
You do not need to reinstall NFS4 or modify its executable.
Optional Configuration
By default, n4patch looks for modules in the patches directory.
You can change this location by creating an n4patch.ini file next to nfs4.exe:
[nfs4patch]
dir=patches
Most users do not need to create this file because the default settings are sufficient.
Troubleshooting
The mod does not appear in the game
Check that the .n4p file is located directly inside the patches folder and that you installed a compatible loader.
Open n4patch.log to see whether the module was loaded or rejected.
The loader reports a compatibility error
The patch may require a different executable version or another version of n4patch.
The loader checks the game's code before applying modifications to avoid writing patches to unexpected locations.
I already have version.dll installed
Use ddraw.dll or another supported loader instead. There is no need to replace your existing graphics wrapper.
Two mods conflict
n4patch detects overlapping code modifications when they attempt to write different bytes to the same location.
Check n4patch.log to identify the conflicting modules, then remove or update one of them.
I want to uninstall n4patch
Remove the n4patch loader DLL and the associated patches folder.
Because the loader does not modify nfs4.exe on disk, the executable itself does not need to be restored.
Note that modules which modify game resources or saved progress may have additional effects. Keep backups of important game data.
Current Status
n4patch is still under active development.
The loader already supports modular patches, compatibility verification, conflict detection, and multiple DLL entry points. Additional features and modules are being developed.
Not every modification has been extensively tested across all game versions and operating systems.
Bug reports and compatibility feedback are welcome.
