Description
A command line utility for editing car data in Need for Speed 4: High Stakes (NFS 4: HS).
This specialized utility provides a convenient way to view, modify,
and save the internal text data stored in car configuration files
(car.viv).
I originally made it while testing support for more than 49 cars in the game.
I needed a quick way to check for duplicate serial numbers, see which cars the game should recognize, and view their names.
Key features:
- CLI interface
- Update fedata for all languages at once
- Quickly scan the CARS folder for duplicate serial numbers
- Quickly edit fedata
- Export and import data in JSON format
The utility is still under development. If you find any problems or bugs, please report them in the comments.
Simple example:
nfs4viv fedata set .DATACARSBZ3R2CAR.VIV --lang all car_id BZ32 serial 7 car_name "BMV Z3 II"

This utility does not support Windows 98.
Can I create mods on Windows 10 and then use them on Windows 98?
Strange question. Of course, once you have a mod car, you can use it on anything that can run the game. On an old machine you won't want to have a highpoly model, but *technically* it can run.
This utility simply lets you view and edit car.viv files.
There is also a separate command (serials) that reads the car data from the
"DB/CARS/"folder and checks it for duplicates. You can copy that
"DB/CARS/"folder to a Windows 10 machine, check for duplicates, fix them if necessary, and then copy it back to Windows 98.The utility can also be used to build car.viv files, although I haven't tested this workflow myself yet.
For example, if you have a repository containing a car model and its resources, you could use this utility as part of the build process to create the final car.viv from those separate files. Potentially quite useful.
