No 4x4 cars, you see them struggling.

The Benz should definitely struggle more than the VeeDubs. FWD > RWD in this case. Well, not in HS, though ^^

If the Wikipedia entry is correct, the bigger VR6 was indeed AWD only. In that case it's probably Golf > New Beetle > SLK.
