Being a car enthusiast site and being a Camaro owner myself, I figured I'd take this space to pay respect to the Camaro & Firebird. Incase you don't already know, today (August 27th, 2002) is the day that the last Camaro and Firebird will roll off the assembly lines in St. Therese, Quebec. A Bright Red Firebird Convertible will be followed by a Bright Red Camaro Convertible and they will both go into GM's Heritage Collection. The St. Therese plant will be officially closed on Wednesday.

Here's to hoping they bring it back soon, as a RWD V8... not a FWD V6 like I've heard rumours about :(

is it the special edition of the camaro? i heard that they were making a real nice one-off camaro as the last one?
RemkoAdmin24 years ago
Today the last ones? Sheesh.
MikeAdmin24 years ago
Not that I know of. Just a Red convertible (not even sure if it's a Z28 or not). I know the last "saleable" Camaro is a red Z28 though, and it will be auctioned off. I wondeer how much it will go for.

A part of America died today. :( At least GM is going to bring back the Camaro eventually.
RemkoAdmin24 years ago
I decided to add an '68 Camaro today, in memory of the good times. ;-)

Hey Mike, I heard that the last one was supposed to be a special edition SS, to celebrate the original SS. Not sure though, heard it on speedvision hehe

Nice redesign Mike! I just completed a nice 2 week tour of the Canadian west coast in a beautiful LS V-8, and this site looks very good. A nice surprise!

....so that's where you've been....

These GM people don't even know what they are doing! They are getting rid of one of america's mucle cars!
S
Shenlong24 years ago
I dunno, they'd be fools...haha fools... to resurrect 'em as a FWD six would be a poor move, as the 'reborn' Mercury Cougar has been recently cancelled. However, there is the Holden Monaro-based GTO coming out...can you say Chevelle?
BMWsport24 years ago
the concept dodge charger is really nice - I got a pic of it when I was in Sebring, in March.

We all know GM has a problem of killing perfectly good names and bringing them back as something that doesn't come please to the original just to cash in on the nameplate. The Impala and Malibu for instance, two cars that had big V-8's and big attitudes on their previous appearance from the market. Now they are docile mid size and compact FWD V-6 mom mobiles...
R
Robby_Rob24 years ago
...And even though it never left the market, what happened to the Monte Carlo? Rosanna Arnold?s ass is more attractive then the rear of the Monte. Both the Impala and Monte look good until you look from the back end and under the hood. A FWD platform (the Impala is built in a stretched Lumina frame by the way) and small V-6?s power these design mistakes...
R
Robby_Rob24 years ago
..By killing the F-body, GM essentially killed the two door, four passenger, front engined RWD sports car and bitched out in the battle of the pony cars. Now that the Mustang has no direct competition in the market, Ford?s Mustang is due for a design change around 2004 or 2005 that puts the Pony?s nameplate on Lincoln LS/Thunderbird platform, yes a car platform...
R
Robby_Rob24 years ago
...But at least they give us a 390hp Super Charged Cobra to say goodbye. I hate to say it, but GM is no longer killing tradition, they are taking a piece of our American heritage with it. God help us?.and help the Mustang too?

Robby - I could say the same for BMW. Ever since Chris Bangle has taken over the design team, all cars in the future, are ugly, weak, elegant, soft, and they dont look, feel, or drive intimidating anymore. I'm just as blown away over this as you all are over the GM cars ;|

Don't get me started on the 'New Age' BMW styling and business culture Jeff. Hollllyyyy crap, what's have those Germans been smoking???Thank God for a '99 540i...ahhh...
BMWsport24 years ago
Shenlong - let it rip.

I despise all the new designs this village idiot is coming up with - they look so weak, and elegant -- there's no intimidation left!! they suck!

I'm shure GM will bring back one of the F Body. The new design looks great Mike!

Just a note, there's no pic for the BMW M8.
M
morrisdb24 years ago
BMWSport- the concept Dodge Charger is indeed great looking--except for the 4 doors!! Don't ask me what Dodge is thinking by resurrecting a muscle car as a 4-door.
M
morrisdb24 years ago
In addition to the 'new age' styling thingy, I agree wholeheartedly. Look at the absoloutely hopeless Aztec, which for some reason just isn't doing what GM thought it would. Gee, I wonder why?? Maybe they shoulda had an Aztec look at itself in the mirror.
M
morrisdb24 years ago
Ford is no exception, either, with its 24-7 concept van. And Honda has ruined the Civic, and don't even ask about their concept 'Element' (click here: Link And that's only a few examples!>:(

I think the automotive world is doomed forever if this keeps up......

car world is becoming family oriented...want a nice car go from 98 and below....as for the camaro worst mistake

leaveing the ford guys open..(im a ford guy (mustangs mostly) but all for chevy tho
and im glad they are changing the new mustang again becouse it is hurtin...
S
Shenlong24 years ago
I disagree that the auotmotive industry has become a family sedan oriented market, but certain companies have been pushing the limits of automotive software and IT and therefore trying to emulate that technological theme through physical and ergonomic design. Take a look at Cadillac as an unfortunate example;(
S
Shenlong24 years ago
Oops, forgot to back my point up: of anything, performance has re-entered the priorities of several companies: rear-drive and powerful engines are back in the perogitives. A 33-bhp Volvo? Done. A rear-drive midsize Infiniti? Bam! And so on. Even Mercury has its police interceptor carbon copy launched. If anything, 'family' sedans have had an injection of testoserone, as it were. That is all;)
S
Shenlong24 years ago
Sorry, 300-bhp Volvo. My mistake.
BMWsport24 years ago
everybody is trying to go for the 'futuristic' look on a car - they need to cut that shit out - because there's no need to look futuristic, until we are in flying cars.

Also, the Aztec is the ugliest car in the world - the ugliest. Whoever designed it, should be slapped with a salmon...POS!!
S
slimjim24 years ago
Yeah bmw, I totally agree with you! Absolutely no concept of style!!! The same thing goes for the Ford Focus, Toyota Echo, and Pontiac Vibe, they look likke they were made by a bunch of plastic panels glued together! So dont give me any of this FUTURISTIC bullshit!!!
S
slimjim24 years ago
hehe thats what I think of it>

can someone tell me what the h*ll the porsche guys were smoking when they came out with the Cayenne?!@#$%? 'cause I want some......j/k
RemkoAdmin24 years ago
So true, the Cayenne is one of the few cars where the camouflaged prototypes in spy shots looked actually better than the final result.
Yet, I'v seen a few photos of the car recently, where it actually looks a bit better; Maybe dark paint colours flatter it.

It makes me mad to wonder how a high end sportscar manufacturer with a deep racing heritage can make an SUV??
M
morrisdb24 years ago
WTF?? Can anyone tell me why I couldn't get to this site for the last three days??
M
morrisdb24 years ago
PS- I don't know if any of you guys heard or not, but the second-last Camaro was aucioned off (the last one was reserved by GM for its museum). The car brought in over $71,000!!!!! I think that's in Canadian dollars.
J
JokinenDesign24 years ago
that camaro special edition is red+silver stripes...and Firebird is yellow...i saw pics of those cars in last week...but almighty PONTIAC GTO is coming back.........
J
JokinenDesign24 years ago
im doesnt ever buy a new car...cos they are too expensive and they haves too much electrical stuff...+ too small engines

i have 1971 charger...with quite big engine...which gives almost 2500bhp...(old pro mod engine)
J
