The 90 quattro IMSA GTO was designed for the 1989 IMSA GT Championship series to compete in the GTO class. Similar to the Group B quattro S1, it is all-wheel drive and powered by a turbocharged inline-five with power increased to 711 hp (530 kW). The Audi of America team would field two cars in all of the GT only races during the season and the all championships race at Road America.

The #4 was driven by Hans-Joachim Stuck, with Walter Röhrl joining for the rounds at Road America and Watkins Glen. A sibling car, the #5, had Hurley Haywood at the wheel, with Scott Goodyear joining for Road America and the round at Mosport. The two cars' season would not get off to a good start, with the two cars finishing 34th and 36th, respectively, at the race around the streets of Miami. They would rebound though, finishing 1-2 in the race at Summit Point and the #4 would also take the win at the race after that at Mid-Ohio. The next two races at Mosport and Road America wouldn't go as well for either car, with the best result being a 9th place for the #5 at Mosport.

Things would really improve for the team from Portland onward, especially for the #4, which would finish on the top two steps of the podium for 7 races straight, taking 5 wins and 2 second places. The #5 wouldn't be far behind, finishing 2nd four times, and 3rd and 4th once each during that time frame. This success would not last until the end of the season though, as at the season finale race at Del Mar, the #4 would finish 26th and the #5 would finish just behind in 27th. Even with the 7 wins, Stuck would not win the drivers' championship, instead finishing 3rd behind the main drivers of the Mercury Cougar XR-7s. Haywood would end up finishing just behind Stuck in 4th.

After that one season, Audi decided to withdraw from the IMSA GT Championship to instead focus on the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) championship. The #4 is currently stored at Audi Tradition, a storage facility near Audi's headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany.

The 90 IMSA GTO quattro was appeared in some games such as iRacing, Forza Motorsport 5, 6, 7 and 2023, RaceRoom Racing Experience, Project CARS 1, 2, 3 and GO, and Project Motor Racing. It visits a Custom Safe House garage for the first time, originally created by NEXTModding & retextured by Rasierer. There will be more to come for this garage in the near future, and it's currently in WIP before release
