The Testarossa name paid homage to the famed World Sportscar Champion 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa sports racing car. Testa Rossa, which literally means "red head" in Italian, refers to the red-painted cam covers sported by both cars' 12-cylinder engines.

The Ferrari Testarossa's design came from Pininfarina, with their body one that sparked some controversy. The side strakes sometimes referred to as "cheese graters" or "egg slicers" that spanned from the doors to the rear fenders were needed for rules in several countries outlawing large openings on cars. The Testarossa had twin radiators in the back with the engine instead of a single radiator up-front. In conjunction the strakes provided cool air to the rear-mounted side radiators, stopping the engine from overheating. The strakes also made the Testarossa wider at the rear than in the front, thus increasing stability and handling.

One last unique addition to the new design was a single high mounted rear view mirror on the driver's side; this is also known as the "Flying Mirror". On US based cars, the mirror was lowered to a more normal placement in 1987 and quickly joined by a passenger side rear view mirror for the driver to be able to easily change lanes safely. The Testarossa uses a 4.9 L (4,943 cc) mid-mounted flat-12 engine, which is actually also a 180°-rotated V12, with each cylinder having 4 valves, with 48 valves total, lubricated via a dry sump system. The engine has a compression ratio of 9.2:1. The Testarossa's F12 produces at most 390 hp (291 kW) at 6,300 rpm and 361 ft·lb (490 N·m) at 4,500 rpm.

The Testarossa can accelerate from 0 - 60 mph (97 km/h) in 5.2 seconds and on to 100 mph (161 km/h) in 11.4 seconds. The top speed of the Testarossa is 180 mph (290 km/h). As Ferrari's range-topper during the 1980s, the car made numerous appearances in pop culture, most notably in the arcade game OutRun, and in the third, fourth, and fifth seasons of Miami Vice. The car has subsequently become synonymous with 1980s "yuppies" and is an icon of 1980s retro culture.

The Testarossa was appeared in games such as Car Town, Real Racing 3, Ferrari GT 1, 2 and 3, Project Gotham Racing 2, 3 and 4, London Racer: World Challenge, The Grand Tour Game, CSR Racing 2, Racing Rivals, Detective Driver: Miami Files, APEX Racer, NFS No Limits, Heat and Unbound, Streets Unlimited 3D (Surnamed "Redman"), Test Drive 1987 and Ferrari Racing Legends, Asphalt 8 & Overdrive, etc. It visits the animated garage from NFS Unbound as 12th car after 370Z Nismo, and it's currently in WIP before release
