The Mistral was first revealed in 19 August 2022. It was unveiled as the final Bugatti to use 8.0 liter quad-turbocharged W16 engine that was first introduced in the Bugatti Veyron in 2005, serving as a swan song for the engine. It shares the same engine with the Chiron Super Sport 300+ which produces 1,578 horsepower. The car was named after the "Mistral" wind which blows from the Rhône Valley through Southern France and into the Mediterranean. The name was given with it being associated with freedom, elegance and speed.

The Mistral pays tribute to the Type 57 Roadster Grand Raid Usine in design, including the car's bodywork, V-shaped windscreen. The launch vehicle pays tribute to Ettore Bugatti, painted in warm black with signature subtle yellow accents, a nod to the founder of the brand who uses this color combination for his personal cars. The car has a reinvented frontal design including new horseshoe grille, lining with other one-off or limited production Bugatti models. The car also shares design similarities with other Bugatti models such as the La Voiture Noire with the A-shaped pillars and side windows, and the Bolide with the X-themed motifs. Production of the 99 units is underway, with each unit costing 5 million euros. Deliveries started in 2024.

The W16 Mistral was appeared in few games such as CSR Racing 2, Driving School Sim, KartRider: Drift (yes, it was added along with Bolide & Centodieci), Asphalt 8 & Legends, and MadOut2: Grand Auto Racing (surnamed "Tempesta Regale"). It visits the Cafe Garage as 9th car after Settimo Cerchio, and it was released last year in NFSAddons
