The Ferrari F40 is the successor to the Ferrari 288 GTO, which was the first road vehicle to break the 186 mph (300 km/h) limit. In turn, it was the first road vehicle to break the 200 mph (322 km/h) limit, holding a road vehicle speed record for 5 years until 1992, when the McLaren F1 was released in 1992 with a speed of 240 mph (386 km/h). It was also the last vehicle to be personally approved by founder Enzo Ferrari before his death. It uses a 2.9 L twin-turbocharged Tipo F120A V8, producing 478 PS (352 kW; 471 bhp) at 7,000 rpm. It is the last vehicle of Ferrari's limited production supercar series to use a V8 engine. Later models (Ferrari F50 [1995-2001], Ferrari Enzo [2002-2004], and Ferrari LaFerrari [2013-Present]) use naturally aspirated V12 engines.

As early as 1984, the Maranello factory had begun development of an evolution model of the 288 GTO intended to compete against the Porsche 959 in FIA Group B. However, when the FIA brought an end to the Group B category for the 1986 season, Enzo Ferrari was left with five 288 GTO Evoluzione development cars, and no series to enter them into competition. Enzo's desire to leave a legacy in his final sports car allowed the Evoluzione program to be further developed to produce a car exclusively for road use. The Ferrari F40 is often known as the 'Le Mans Ferrari' due to its popularity with privateer teams in the Le Mans Endurance Series, which it primarily competed in instead of Group B.
