It has an open cover for headlight as an option. In 1998, BMW teamed up with Williams F1 Team to develop the BMW V12 LM, a 2-seat open-air race car. The new race car saw action right away as 2 V12LMs were entered in 24h of Le Mans. However, 4 hours after starting the race, a defect in the suspension caused both cars to retire. As a result, a new machine called BMW V12 LMR was created. It appears to be the #15, driven by Joachim Winkelhock, Pierluigi Martini & Yannick Dalmas, who has finished the 1999 24h of Le Mans in 1st place overall.

With the problems of the previous year remedied & improvements made to the car's aerodynamics, the 1999 machine participated in the 12 hours of Sebring, where it took the checkered flag, with Tom Kristensen, J.J. Lehto, & Jorg Muller behind the steering wheel. In June of the same year, 2 V12 LMRs entered the 24h of Le Mans. The car of Joachim Winkelhock, Pierluigi Martini & Yannick Dalmas set the Le Mans record for 365 laps & winning the overall title. The other car, driven by Kristensen, Lehto, & Muller was in the lead for two-thirds of the race, but was forced to retire before noon. It participated in the ALMS in 2000 with the team of Lehto & Muller winning 2 races. In the yearly drivers' rankings, Muller was 5th & Lehto 6th. In the series' Constructors' Championship, the V12 LMR took 2nd overall

The V12 LMR was appeared in various games such as Le Mans 24 Hours, Test Drive games (Le Mans & 6), Total Immersion Racing, Gran Turismo games (4, 2009, 5 & 6), Forza Motorsport games (2005, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 & 2023), Project CARS (2015, 2, 3 and GO), and Bolshie Gonki.
