I got the chance to go up to Los Angeles on the weekend along with Josh (jtace) and Bob from Needforbetterspeed.net and meet with the producers of the next Need For Speed Title, NFS Underground. Honestly, I wasn't too thrilled about the game last week, but after getting a chance to play the game my views have changed completely. They really have done an amazing job on NFS:UG. The newly announced "Drift" mode was my personal favourite to play. There are 20 cars in the game, and each is customizable in a number of ways, from changing the front end, hood, spoiler etc, to adding decals. So chances are very slim that when you race someone online they will have the same car as you. EA and Blackbox have also done a lot of work on the Online play for NFS:UG. You will be able to race and build your car offline and then take that exact car and race it online, and everyone else will be able to see it as well. Very cool.

I'll have more information soon, just have to remember what I'm allowed/not allowed to reveal ;)

Josh is working on a review of the trip, so I will have a link to that once it's ready. But overall I'm really excited about NFS7 :)

This is why hands-on reviews are so important. I'm glad I never joined the "OMGthegameisSOgonnaSuck" brigade, it's true that I was never too thrilled by the looks of the cars, but whether the game is fun to play is a lot more important. (And as I understand it, you don't HAVE to add those bodykits, right?) I'm hearing lots of good stuff about NFSU from other directions as well, so I'm quite hopeful.

The part that most excites me is the 'customizeability' (gotta love inventing words) of the games. I'm all about personalizing my car--and no, you don't have to add the ridiculous body kits :). In my opinion, this is a fresh idea that has a lot of potential. Although I love the classic NFS series and am a self-proclaimed car fanatic, I am getting a bit tired...

... of only being able to change the car's colour or maybe drive a convertible instead of a coupe. The many options this game will give leads to endless possibilities and thousands of cars unique in their own way. There will, of course, be some ridiculous cars once the online racing starts, but that's life. And I'll be seeing you all through the smoke clouding my rearview mirror >:p

So there are 20 cars in this game and what, 500 in GT4?

Nobody compared it to GT4 ;)
