Produced to mark the end of the Mazda RX-7 line in August 2002, the Spirit R was a limited-production, final-edition variant of the series. It was offered in three versions: the two-seat Type A, the 2+2 Type B (both equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission), and the 2+2 Type C, which featured a 4-speed automatic transmission. All models came equipped with 17-inch BBS wheels, red brake calipers, and interior panels finished with a special soft-touch coating. A total of 1,504 units were produced (1,044 Type As, 420 Type Bs, and only 40 Type Cs) and all were only sold in Japan in selected dealerships from April 22, 2002.

The RX-7 Spirit R (Type A) was appeared in games such as SRS: Street Racing Syndicate, Gran Turismo Concept Tokyo Geneva, 4, 5, 6, Sport and 7, APEX Racer, Assetto Corsa 2014 & EVO, Need For Speed 2015, Payback, Heat and Unbound, Forza Motorsport 1, 2, 3 and 2023, The Crew 2 and Motorfest, Asphalt Street Storm Racing & Legends, Project Torque, GT Cube, Forza Horizon 4 & 5, Real Racing 3 & etc.

It visits the Backstreet Garage from Drift Spirits as 32nd car after M4 GTS, and Addon Version of the mod is currently private
