Family of three dies in car plunge at Jakarta shopping center

A family of three died Thursday when their car plunged from the sixth level of a parking garage at the Permata Hijau International Trade Center in Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta, where they had attended a church service for the Ascension Day of Jesus Christ.

The deceased have been identified as Topan Rusli, 45, his wife Trisna Priyatna, 41, and their son Samuel, 12.

The three died instantly when their black Honda Jazz, driven by Trisna, crashed through a concrete boundary at around noon and plunged six floors to the ground.

Acquaintances said the three, residents of Kemandoran, Grogol Utara, West Jakarta, were coming from a prayer service at a church located on the seventh floor of the trade center.

Officials are still trying to determine exactly why or how the car broke through the barrier. There were no witnesses to the accident.

"We are not sure what happened because nobody was there (on the sixth level) when the car plunged to the ground floor," said Hendrikus, a building security officer.

He said he was at his security post, near the entrance to the complex, when he heard a loud crash as the vehicle smashed into the ground.

"I went to check the noise and saw the car was destroyed and the three passengers badly injured. They were already dead, but I did not know that yet."

Rescuers worked more than two hours to remove the bodies from the wreckage. The bodies were later taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital in Central Jakarta for autopsy.

Several people at the scene speculated that Trisna lost control of the vehicle as she attempted to navigate a sharp turn.

"One churchgoer said Trisna was still learning how to drive. She might have panicked as she took the turn and hit the gas instead of the brake, causing the car to burst through the boundary wall," said one security officer, who asked that his name not be used.

The management of the shopping complex said they did not know how the accident might have occurred.

"We do not believe the accident was the result of negligence on our part, as everything (in the parking area) has been properly installed," said Jhony Liem, general affairs manager of ITC Permata Hijau.

He said lane dividers were clearly visible on the pavement, and concrete boundaries had been properly installed.

Jhony said this was the first serious accident to take place in the parking structure. He said the building management would await the police report before commenting further on the accident.
