Well, it is great if someone manages to get an old game running on new renderers, just for the sake of future hardware compatibility (because there will be no graphical benefits in any way!).

But when using an old operating system for new hardware and new games you have to compromise.
I think there were several attemps made to make newer Dx-versions work on XP.
Once i also had a DirectX 10 patch installed on my old XP machine to get the new effects of the latest S.T.A.L.K.E.R game enabled.
It was working indeed for that game. But i remember i had trouble with other games that refused to start afterwards. This machine is long gone tho.
Also keep in mind you can't simply uninstall such a patch. So if you experience problems you can prepare to completely wipe your windows installation.

If you have the possibility to run Win7 or Win10 it will be the better choice. If your modern pc has drivers for XP available you may think about a dual booting setup.
But DirectX 10 on XP is just an emergency solution IMO.

If you want to try it anyway you may take a look at this link:
https://www.raymond.cc/blog/easily-install-and-download-directx-10-for-windows-xp/

Seems now there even is a program available to switch between the DirectX versions...

...but still:
Quote"[...] these DirectX 10 versions are never going to be a true substitute for the real thing and if you’re serious about gaming you should think about getting an operating system that has native support. For the most part these programs try to emulate large parts of DirectX 10 and they will sometimes give you the ability to run a DirectX 10 only game but won’t give the added graphical enhancements. Performance may be reduced also, but if you’re desparate, these programs are your only hope."

Well I'm completely aware that any higher DX version than DX7 (at the time it had been written) wouldn't have any new advantages or effects on HS, I was just asking for presonal experiences with that kind of 'improvements'. This DX10 RC2 provides (as it says..) possibility for complete de-installation the delivered drivers, I tried it and DX dialogue has proven me that so far, none if the drivers were still in the system.

Since I'm using a dual boot system with both XP and Win7 (which delivers DX11 support), so I can always compare, but as said the game itself was written a long time ago when e.g. Voodoo and Glide were still topic.

All that would have be become more relevant if NFS had been re-written with the CryEngine, but that project also died some time ago as I heard?
