Running NFS4 with DirectX 8

Whenever I attempt to run NFS4 using the DirectX 8 DLLs from the SPoT patch, I get no fog and some other graphic problems, which forces me to utilise the DirectX 7 ones. Even weirder, my video card is supposed to be compatible with DirectX 8 (GeForce FX5500). Has anyone been able to run NFS4 flawlessly with DirectX 8? If so, what are your computer specs just so I have a comparison parameter?

Does it not run well with DX 8?  I have DX9.0c for win98se, btu i used to used dx8, and most games run no prob, even NFS3, so I wonder why it wouldn't run with dx8 if NFS3 does.  Or maybe it is my Voodoo card that enables me to run it well.  Does NFS4 run well with Voodoo Cards?

I got the following results:
DirectX 8.dll - no fog
DirectX 7.dll - perfect
DirectX 7 - HighPoly Cars Patch.dll - again, perfect.... I usually use this one.
DirectX 6.dll - game wouldn't start

Have you tried the glide wrapper? It comes with the latest version of the SP/EP.

I use DirectX 7.dll. DirectX.7.dll High poly runs well too. The others .dll's  runs very bad.
I 've got a P4 3.0 (socket 478) 1'5MB of RAM and ATI 9600 PRO 128MB(quite old)
I can run perfectly NFS IV, but since i have got this Card i can't run NFS V :(:(:(

No, I haven't... In fact, I didn't know they updated the SP.

There are DLLs from other EA games which could work (FIFA 2002, World Cup 2002). I've seen a post from some years ago at JP Racing which said that the World Cup 2002 DLLs made the game much faster.

Does it run well under Glide?  I have a modded version of the last certified driver for Win98se for my card.  It can run stuff as far as DX8, but not too much further.  I can get a game I have to run even though it needed DX8.1 drivers.  It is a drag racing game, and it runs great, everything is awesome, except the cars hich show the colour of the car, the correct shpe, the window outline, but no paint effects, and the windopws are the same colour as the paint.  But, if my Voodoo driver works with dx8, will there still be problems, or is this a problem on some machines and not others????

With the glide wrapper by zeckensack, I'm able to start a race (though with poor resolution even if I set it to 1024x768 in the game), but whenever I try to go back to the main menu my NFS4 crashes and the following message is displayed:

Whenever I run the game after the crash, it keeps crashing when loading the menu.

Is this problem only with XP?  I use Win98se.

XP runs fine on my 4 year old machine.I use direct X 8 without any patchs or mods. Many have said that DX8 or XP wont work.Good idea install fresh and avoid those fixs.Good luck.

I could never get the wrappper to work very well either.
The menu looks fine etc, but the race gets about 1 fps especially on higher resolution.
The reason I reccomended it is because some racers I know have gotten good results with it (hence it's inclusion in the SP/EP).

If you want to switch back, you can run the 3D setup via the start menu.

Wrapper?  What is that, something to make your vid card look like something else to the game?

I already did, it's just that I wanted the cool menu graphics and crisper menu font. :D
