Description

I couldn't find a high-res texture pack for vanilla Dolphin Cove that I really liked, so I decided to make my own textures using AI upscaling tools and/or GIMP. Nearly everything has been upscaled or remade to a higher res, including skyboxes and some night/weather textures, and some minor texture edits/fixes have been made to the track itself.

You can get an idea of how the mod looks in-game via this video I threw together:

(Recommended) System Requirements

NFS4 is an old game but combined with recent modifications to it, it can actually get pretty demanding. Here's some things you will probably need for a smooth experience.

1) Run on VEG's Modern Patch.

- a) Modern Patch is CPU intensive, so it's probably best to have a CPU from within the last ten years.

- b) I'm not sure Modern Patch was meant to run on systems older than Windows 10, which is what I run. YMMV with older OSs.

2) A decent GPU with (probably) at least 256 MB or more of VRAM.

Instructions

1) Make a backup of your Coastal folder found in [your NFS4 installation directory] -> Data -> Tracks.

2) Unzip my mod somewhere and cut/paste the files from my mod's Coastal folder into your installation's Coastal folder. Overwrite all when prompted.

Looks great. Despite the nice drive we can't fish and dive. Maybe a toast at the coast.

Before you start, check your graphicscard.

"Veg patch", The best solution for the high resolution.

If your comp is having trouble, maybe don't blame your GPU, because from what I understand from Veg's patch is that NFS4 is super CPU heavy

    Amazing!

It´s incredible that such a leap in quality is possible with the help of an automatic upscaler. There are some little inconsistencies and seams at some grass borders and the upscaler did not do too well with the tree wall and rock textures but the overall quality is just  amazing and sooo much better than the stock one. Pleeease don´t stop improving all of the stock tracks ;)

PS: I like your manually exchanged  textures like the the menu sign at the fish´n´chips snack bar and the new cobblestones.

PPS: I really love the new position of the sun and the slightly changed weather file... but you forgot to add the "tr.ini" to the zip.  ;)

Thanks for your (and everyone else's) kind words, I appreciate it. I already have preliminary work done on other tracks, and I plan to make full releases of those as well (if I have the will to do it).

Yeah there's some not-so-good jobs, and while I could touch up all of them, it would just take so long. That's why I have no special permissions on anything I make--I hope someone might want to help improve this old game using my files as some starting point.

I'm glad the those changed textures are good enough--the upscalers just couldn't do a decent job so I had to make new ones. As for the position of the sun, I didn't change it as far as I know. I also didn't know I have to include the .ini's. I plugged these files into a vanilla installation of NFS4 and it all worked well, so I think to be safe I'll leave the ini's out. I hesitate to include anything else in my zips because I don't remember all the mods I have installed, and don't want to take credit for anything I didn't do myself.

That´s strange... this is the view to the ocean with my vanilla ini file:

    https://i.ibb.co/6JJVsDX/sunpos.jpg

as you can see: the sun is on the opposite direction of the sky... and the
background skymap has a different position, too... maybe it has to do
with the renderer options of Vegs patch.

edit: I can´t get the picture to work here... copy and paste to browser works

Cooya!, you are most likely using a modded ini file. Most likely the one from this mod by NoaJM from NFSCars: https://www.nfscars.net/need-for-speed-high-stakes/2/files/view/11197/. It is the "Dolphin Cove (PSX to PC)" mod.

I experienced the same problem like you and had forgotten that I installed it over a year ago. Make sure you have the original ini file by copying the one from your game disk.

EDIT: Alternatively, if you want to keep using NoaJM's mod, you can simply open the tr.ini file search for the entry "hasSun=0" and change its value to "1". This will put the sun back in its original location. Hope this helps!
