Hi guys, I'm back (finally) my old computer died and so I finally got a new one, I'm running Windows XP Pro with an ATI Radeon 3650 HD graphics card, DirectX 9.0c and more memory than I know what to do with. So life's great, but there's one problem. I installed HS, patched it up and did all the fixes to make it work on XP, just like I did with my old computer, but now whenever I go to run the game, the computer kinda thinks for a bit, then just like stops. The game doesn't even start. I just stay at my desktop forever, as if the computer forgot the game exists or something. So now I'm like really curious about what's wrong, and how do I fix it??
If anyone can help, please do respond, I really want to be able to play the best NFS ever again.
Try not Patching it at all,i didnt have to when i Installed mine on Xp a year, ago or so. Maybe just try to go into Propertys and Check the box that says Run in Win98 Compatibility Mode is all i ever did.
I never did the Long Haul. thing about Xp Patch stuff hope it helps at all
Welcome back also :)
On my pc I didn't install any patches, I just downloaded expansion pack and nfs works because expansion pack makes it work on xp perfectly and it adds more tracks and cars and improves effects. Simple
^ This.
Tried reinstalling, the EP, no patches, all sorts of options... no good. :(
So I'll just have to dig out HP2 and Most Wanted I guess
It may or may not work but try installing Geminiyo's game mod; when I first installed HS on my XP PC it wouldn't run, but after doing all the stuff in the mod and adding all the fixes it ran ok.
What exactly does not work? You turn D3D mode on and try to start the game and what happens?
Here's what I did:
Patch HS to version 4.50.
Replace the original d3da.dll with a different one, most likely from the Spotpatch.
And the game runs perfectly ;)
Well... nothing happens. ever.
So that's the problem. And I've tried patch 4.5, plus I always use the updated graphics d3da... otherwise it would just be baaaaad. LOL
I'll work on it this weekend when I have time. I haven't had time to get on the comp much with soccer and band and school work
Well, the d3da.dll hardly improves your graphics (though it might enable different resolutions), but the right one will make your game work. That's the point. Improving the gfx can be done via your gfx card driver (forcing FSAA and AF).

. What's "FSAA" and "AF"? :ugh:
Full scene anti-aliasing (smoothens 3D edge) and anisotropic filtering (smoothens textures).
cool, how do I turn it on? :D
Using your GFX driver's control panel.
"the computer kinda thinks for a bit, then just like stops" i quote. ok right click the desktop icon then go into propertys and clcik run as admin
There is nothing called 'run as admin' in properties.
k then right click then just run as admin
That All Things Are REALLY INNECESSARY I got This Tutorial SEE THIS:
1: He says he is not a valid Win32 application:
- In the game icon called "NFS - HIGH STAKES" press the right mouse button and put "properties" and set "compatibility"
- Click on the box that says "Run in compatibility mode for" and put Windows 98 / ME or 95 and below
click on the box "run in 640x480 resolution
- Now try the game ...
2: When you start says - "your hard drive has less than 1 mb of free space, please refer to the reference card"
- This problem does not affect anything to the game, spends almost all WIN XP and VISTA only every modification you make to the game and unlock cars
medals, keep track not only have to open it as compatibility mode with Windows 98 / ME and the problem was resolved
