Title: Spam posts
Post by: Mike on Nov 16, 2008, 3:38 PM
Just so everyone knows,

All those spam posts that you're seeing, aren't being generated by actual people. They are being submitted by bots, that just crawl the web and find forums to post their spam to.

Anyway, I'm trying to find a good way to fix it, without needing to migrate to different forum software. So for now, just report and spam posts you see, and ignore them :)

It's not on your computer.

Spam bots are scripts that people write, that just go out there and post spam to various forums.

"Forum spambots surf the web, looking for guestbooks, wikis, blogs, forums and any other web forms to submit spam links to the web forms it finds. These spambots often use OCR technology to bypass CAPTCHAs present. Some spam messages are targeted towards readers and can involve techniques of target marketing or even phishing, making it hard to tell real posts from the bot generated ones. Not all of the spam posts are meant for the readers; some spam messages are simply hyperlinks intended to boost search engine ranking."

So it's nothing on your computer, it's somebody else that just turns it on, and then lets it go post on forums.

Remko and I have been killing spam posts for a couple of weeks now. The one you reported (which Will also reported) was one of the nasteir ones, though. So much appreciated.

I think I've got a handle on them now, though. We'll see.

Just popping in to say thanks to everyone who has reported those ugly spamposts in recent weeks, you helped us greatly with wiping up those ugly stains from our otherwise nice lil' corner of the internet.

Neither Mike nor the rest of the staff are online 24/7, but the sooner you report it, the sooner we can remove it. Please keep doing so. :)

These spambots can get really annoying.  I swear I've had a few add me as an MSN contact just to advertise a porn webcam site or something like that; I mean, damn.....I have seen some porn in my life but to go after me to join their site that aggressively is just annoying and a bit twisted.

Yep, they are. I don't like it if people are being scammed.

Whats really weird is when you get a message from a contact of yours on MSN inviting you to look at certain pics of them in their underwear - something you know the person (a male) would never actually do..... :eek3:

Spam bots are annoying - theres a lot of them at iplounge.net too - probably a few a day..every once in a while, the admins go on a purge with the member list and delete *most* of the member's accounts that have less than 5 posts, because the majority of them are leftover spam bot accounts. :ugh:
