Title: monkey.wesley's first project! cadillac xlr cabrio
Post by: monkey.wesley on Feb 21, 2007, 8:49 PM
hi all!

it is finally time that i started to model a car.

i'm beginning to do a cadillac xlr cabrio. i have this up at nfscars as well. so ignore the modelling right now, as i will need to start again and extrude earlier. but give me some good tips to model well.

wesley.

@HiFi: nothing really to see eh? well according to both my computers they work fine even after restarting.

@ToyotaWish: sure! i'll just need to do a little improvising to make a hardtop. but first... i need to know how to extrude vertices to make a 3d model. hmph. trust me... i'm probably the noobiest modeler you'll see around.

also... if you guys suggest any tutorials to use or just some suggestions for me throughout my modelling... please do ^^.

wesley.

What the hell are you people talking about?
He showed us an image of the blueprints in zmodeler.
How are we supposed to help him?

@HiFi: first of all, you better watch what you say... this is my FIRST project. alright? as i said before... i can't even extrude the vertices properly! maybe you could help me with that. but i don't want any chat-fighting going in this topic so please cooperate.

@stylizer: lol. the 3d image is the thing i'm struggling on... as said before... either i'm really noob or i just can't seem to get a good 3d shape! i really hate to ask you pro modelers to help me out since i'm probably asking questions you have probably answered over and over again.

btw... i may not be modelling for the next week or so since i have music festival (piano competitions) and projects as well. but feel free to give me some modelling advice or recommend some tutorials ^_^

well well well... i appreciate you presence here and it will be a good addition to thios community... you will see many people here making hard comments..even I, but never ever get embarrased by such things, such guys are not bad but they have to be hard sometime and polite sometime... and such guys are really helpful during your projects.... i still remember that my first car was nothing but a mess of polies ..hehe...

I see that you are needing a tutorial about modeling....
please go to
http://freakforspeed.sitesled.com and see the Zmodeler Tutorial there... moreover you will also find tutorials guidin to the rest of car editing and getting it in game.

but I will recommend you that dont do the cadillac XLR for ur very first project... but choose an easier project..  but as you wish so..... ask me if u need help on any point.

I am not a pro modeler. I am car convertor. :p Atleast you tried that much. I don't know even that much to make also ;) It happens for beginers. SLowly you will also learn & be a good modelor next to 5speed , Martin Leps, etc. ;)

I won't be able to update for a week or so since i have music competitions going on. but then i have a two-week spring break right after so hopefully i can get some more done during that time.

basically what you do is create 3 square at a time (first surface tool, then poly>strip). Then move them to the position on the blueprints in all three views. Then move the 3d model to the same angle as one of your reference pics and adjust each vertice to fit.

I tried modeling for two years without reference pics, and its impossible. Blueprints are really only for scale and basic shape, all details need reference.

Some people can model without blueprints.

I dont agree with you HiFi.... actually when u coeme to know that how to place the polies to do a certain thing... theres no need of blueprint... many of guys do without BPs and one or two of my models (Toyota Celica 2007 concept and Ferrari Ascari) are without blueprints... but this is an advanced level of modeling... though no dobt that Bps are a great resource of prefection.

yeah i keep trying to move them all correctly in each view but all i get is a jumbled mess of polys. but again i don't have much time this week to actually try harder.

okay... it's the last day of my festival so i thought... why not try out doing some 3d stuff on my xlr. i've attached an image of my modeled segment of the front bumper. i realized that the blueprints aren't always in place and that it's hard to follow it. but check it out please ^^

same as HiFi...

blueprints are always or alomost not correct.... so instead of totally depnding on blueprints, see the refrence pictures and try to interpret the point and then sketch polygons there. You must have at least three refrence pictures, side, front/rear, and one from side-front/rear
Title: monkey.wesley's first project! cadillac xlr cabrio
Post by: HiFi on Mar 15, 2007, 1:43 PM
yea, i couldn't model a car for 2 years because i refused to use alot of reference pics, just look at them and model so it looks right.

yeah... definitely... i can tell a major offset now... but i'm just sticking to one view atm and if the other views are off then i'll just adjust if according to my preference but in a way it still looks realistic... i've done more of my bumper... probably some screw-ups again... help me out guys ^^

edit: sry abt attachment... gif's will only work atm. here it is again.

edit 2: bah... nothings working... i'll re-upload with imgshack.

looks really detailed, and placed perfectly...thats some good work for a first, but i have to honestly say its not much to comment about, maybe you should finish the full front bumper and THEN post again.

youre doing great :)

looks quite good as your first model..
i will suggest some tips here.

1. keep horizontal and vertical lines of polies on 90 degrees unless diagonals are needed. it will increase the smoothness.

2. keep the count of polygons in even value, not in odd. (which cant be divided by 2)

3. Turn on Normals to Automatic by going to Options > Normals > Automatic from the above toolbar.

4. goto vertices level, select all the vertices, press SEL and Surface > Normals > Calculate and click on model. this will adjust all the normals of the body.

5. while you take screenshot, and to check either the polies are smooth or this is a bump, move your pointer on the 3d view and press "Q". This will give you the flatshade body. pressing Q again will give the smooth body.

Remove the blueprint and smooth the lines a bit.
Also press q and give us a flatshade please, looks very good for a beginner now. :bigthumb:

smooth the lines? as in adding more polys to smooth out the model? not sure what you're meaning.

so... i got the front bumper as requested but the shape is very rough and also i realized that my blueprints are different sizes... therefore not lining up. hmph. very tough. i also tried what you suggested P^S so here it is.

i actually have another file where i modeled the whole side first instead of trying to 3d the front bumper from the first few polies. i was going to use that website but i did 3ding on bumper... maybe i'll open the other file and follow the website

hmm.. when you strart modeling... making flat surface this way is useless i think... because u dont knw that which poly will be extruded and how???/ so keep it extruding while u make each poly

Post by: monkey.wesley on Mar 26, 2007, 9:39 AM
yeah i guess you're right... but the tutorial said you could hide part of your modeling so you could extrude... but it's not working for me... so i'll stick to the one i'm actually working on... update will come soon.

um... i've started on some 3d headlights... i know... i really shouldn't do such complicated stuff as a beginner... but i find that it really needs it... i'll need a transparent headlight cover and i'll need to know how to make a transparent part. help me out guys. pic will be uploaded once i get home.

goto faces level..
select the faces to be to transparent
press SEL
press Ctrl+A
goto second tab on the properties box
check "transparent" box
click OK

ok... thanks for the advice PS... i managed to get the transparent headlight cover. except i'm having trouble telling if its there or not... and also moving its vertices around. well... i need to give it a color... so it's easier to tell. because i'm having trouble making sure the shape is right because there are so many polies. any way to hide some polies or add a colour to the polies?

urgh... my attachments are never loading. gotta ask mike. imageshack version to come

thanks for the comments guys... back into school now... so little modelling work happening... except i really need someone to answer my question on how to hide a part of my modelling so i can model the 3d healights inside. also i need that just to make sure i know which polies i'm moving. do you think a 3d grille and 3d fog lights are too much for me?

urgh... really hard to get things done... i'm afraid i'll need to postpone till the summer... because of school work... but will update WHEN i have a chance to add something...

still need to know how to put a color on my mesh tho... so i can see the transparency in the headlights and work on headlights contents.
