Title: Yeehaw! - A Dukes of Hazzard project
Post by: MADMAN_nfs on Mar 15, 2017, 4:45 AM
Im tinkering on another movie car and wanted to show off some pics.

It's the famous '69 Charger "General Lee" from the "Dukes of Hazzard".

Base-car is the great NFS-Carbon conversion from Reggaeton RS (http://www.nfscars.net/need-for-speed-high-stakes/2/files/view/11151/).
Guess most of us got along with Addict's version (http://www.nfscars.net/need-for-speed-high-stakes/2/files/view/331/) so far, which is a great car, but it was created in 1999 (!).

In the meantime there was a lot of development in the scene, so im wondering no one considered a repolished version of this classic :)

(http://i.pi.gy/wPA3.jpg) (http://i.pi.gy/a3o1.jpg)(http://i.pi.gy/0WgV.jpg) (http://i.pi.gy/Bagx.jpg)
(http://i.pi.gy/b5km.jpg) (http://i.pi.gy/7Dnp.jpg)(http://i.pi.gy/xzWe.jpg) (http://i.pi.gy/rmkm.jpg)
(http://i.pi.gy/8LoK.jpg) (http://i.pi.gy/ZE4l.jpg)(http://i.pi.gy/VPon.jpg) (http://i.pi.gy/QRWD.jpg)

Exterior body work and appearance are almost done. Still working on the wheels though (one work-in-progress-wheel can be seen). Used Blender and the method from this tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97MEqzs-yCk) to create basic wheel shape.  Thanks due Freak-DS, who (very very patiently) explained some basic Z-Modeler stuff to me in the past, im getting more comfortable with Z-Modeler and did most detail work with it (e.g. texture-mapping, Push-Bar and the crossed flags at rear window).

The car's interior still misses lot of detailing. I plan to add a rollcage, 2 drivers, animated steering wheel and a new antenna.

Congrats to this great idea Madman! :D .. originally planned to also make a Gen' Lee version based on my reworked version of Krystoff's Charger but now you leapfrogged me -LOL

If I hadn't been 'delayed' by the current admittedly 'escalating' F250 project I would've started my reworks on the '77 Fury for the '75/'76 variant on which I was also planning a new Sheriff Rosco's copcar and simultaneously a General Lee Charger version, but it is simply great that someone took initiative on another great TV show/movie car!!! ^-^

I can offer you to use some stuff that would match this fabulous project like e.g. the interior that was also adapted from the NFSC Charger, the driver(s) or sound files that already provide the famous Dixie horn .. whatever you can make use of .. =D =D =D

If you want to use for example the interior I can assist you on re-adapting it to the NFSC Charger since I downscaled the whole car to real size ..

Wish you many many success on it, keep up great work and more ideas like that! Yeeehaaaaw! =D

Yeah .. and I'm really happy that NFS comes alive again by and by not only that cars were still made but people take action in creating new cars by themselves not just converting from other games (this is not meant to be an offense to anyone btw) .. need to calm down poor old me this is too exiting .. ^-^

Hope this example will catch on with others to revitalize their abilities, we have such great car makers in here .. :o

Hey, nice choice here, Madman. I still remember Addict's version as one of my first cars I ever tried as addon cars for HS. Didn't knew anything about serial number changes at the time, tho  :D Hope to see it finished soon. And possibly, use Frank's handling settings on NFSC as a base. At least that's the combination I'm using currently, works like a charm.
Any plans for further migration into '68 or '70? I don't think that I need to say where iconic black '68 R/T was used very same year?  :)

Oh, i would love to see a well made/converted '68 Charger. Thats my favorite charger too, the Hitmen-charger from Bullitt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBLOLi_Ex-Q) :)
But there are no plans to rebuild it into a '68 Charger by me.

Handlingwise nothing is set yet. Not sure if it will be rather realistic or more arcadish... we will see ;)

Hehe, remember that one, was my first classic Charger and again a Smokey! original .. ^-^
Reworked that a bit with an ODL and gave it the GT wheels from Ryan Trevisol's Shelby Mustang 350R back then too .. ;)

Cool one by Smokey, he had a good feeling for classic muscle cars when they actually weren't in focus those days like they are in recent days ... :)

Tires and new Antenna are in place.

I tried to match the teardrop-shaped CB antenna that was used in the first 4 seasons of the tv-show.

Good ol' days... i bet they had plenty of fun creating the show back then :D

Found that vid of all jumps until year 2000. No wonder they totaled more than 150 chargers due to stunt jumps.

I been working on so much when I get time to, I usually have 10 or more projects going at once and it gets hecktic when my job schedules overtime and thus I have to wait til I have free time. As for the General Lee, I have the old one but this new one you made looks much better :). Did you copy the TGA from the old one or make a new one?

I only wish James Best was still around to show this to :(. I'll never forget when I met him. :).

Oh yeah, Looks a helluva lot better than my old one I made from Baardk's car, I only keep that one around for parts now and to get stuff off the TGA for the new bases I'm using made from a car made by RenaFox. Personally though I have no ax to grind except for the certain TV station that caved into whiners complaining over the Confederate flag on top of General Lee and have agreed to stop showing Dukes Of Hazzard and to the stores that have agreed to stop selling their merchandise..All cause whiners complained over that flag. I say you don't like don't watch, don't like don't buy..But it seems we're all about trying to please everyone these days vs individuality, I'm proud to be 100% non conformist and Southern :).

LOL, I was fortunate enough to meet a few former East German police and NVA soldiers a while back and in highschool I was in a exchange program with the German police at Hamburg,We traded things back and forth between us by mail but I've never been overseas, Only to Mexico and it was bad in Tijuana. I'm your average RedNeck from Southern Illinois, born and raised there. As for the Russians, I met one on the Emergency 4 mod site as we both liked to find old Soviet and Modern Russian police and rescue vehicles to use in games, His name is Aleksandr Khabarov (RussianRescueR) and he is a fireman/part time soldier in Russia, Another I met on NFS Cars many years back Семён Чернета (or Samuel Duck in English according to Google Translate) and Vitalii Smirnov I met on Ebay, He was selling a nice Lada Niva 4X4 Russian Militia (police) and I bought that, Later we got to chatting and I asked if he had FaceBook and he did so I added him and the rest is history.

Anyway, How I met Rosco (James Best) I had been wanting to meet him a while and when I found out he was coming to Greenville at the Globe Theater (up North but not too too far away from me) I decided I was gonna go there and meet him, Bring along my Hazzard County Sheriff badge which was one of the many he wore on the TV show, and have him autograph that, I also bought one of his books he wrote which is his biography (Best In Hollywood..The Good,The Bad,And The Beautiful) I had mentioned the site I work for (NFs Police HQ) to him since he loved video games as well, He had me write it down on one of his business cards he carried along and said he'd check it out someday, But he never got the chance :(.

Interior is making progress. Central Rollbar is placed and looks good imo. As i noticed, the car was not fitted with a complete rollcage for the tv show, so that part is accomplished.
Old driver also got replaced. I used "default_cop_1" from a cop.fce as base.
Pretty much butchered the guy... chopped off his hand, feet and decapitated him ^^
A bloody mess i tell you  ;)

As long as you can squeeze it in the texture. Otherwise just toss the usual shades in.

Experimented a little with facemaps and i dont like the outcome. Brings too much imbalance to detail level imo. I mean hands, clothes etc. everything is just mapped in one color and then you have a detailed facemap with eyes, mouth and ears... won't work. At least im not skilled enough to make it work.
Wasn't planned to spend so much work for the drivers anyways - focus should be on the car, right?
So i will try add more shadows to drivers face, but thats it.

Some video content of recent state:

https://www.youtube.com/v/Lw17wEDPvuA

Worked a bit on the colors. The scheme in the video is supposed to be "Corvette Flame Red", which was used 70% of the time during the tv show according to my information. I orientated myself at the color table (RGB values) in this forum:
http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php?topic=64770.0
Color 75 Flame Red on a 1975 Corvette:

As seen in the attached picture (which is a real photo of the "cast" backstage) almost every hue of orange is possible... ;)
But for my liking your orange is a little too red and too little orange. I liked the old color better but maybe it´s just me.

But what you reeeeaaally should take care of: The sidewindows... you have to delete them or the dukeboys are not able to get inside the car ;) If the windows are a convertible option I would rather kill it off as the sidewindows can never be closed on General Lee... I would make the sticker behind the rearwindow a convertible option instead as it was only there in the very first season (1) and hasn´t been on the car for the next 6 seasons ;)

PS: Great work on my alltime-favourite moviecar! I just love it! Thank you sooo much
Title: Re: Yeehaw! - A Dukes of Hazzard project
Post by: MADMAN_nfs on Mar 24, 2017, 1:20 PM
Thanks for the input Cooya. Yes thats exactly what i had in mind  :)
I want to cut the side windows of the doors and make the rear-side windows and the crossed flags the convertible part. Bit strange i know but im limited to the game options at last...

About that photo: i dont think thats from the original tv show. In the background you can clearly see a 1993+ Crown Victoria and a 1993+ Chevy Suburban/Tahoe ... the show ended in 1985 tho ^^
So these cars are either from the tv movies or replica from a car meeting and thus not necessarily authentic.
But yes, if we break it down, in the end i will set up different shades of orange as option ;)

That was a cool video, loved the music. :) Kinda agree with Cooya on the colour but I must admit it's very subtle.
Also thought at first that the tires look a bit too grey, but after checking some photos of the real thing I guess it doesn't look too far off. Perfect 100% black wouldn't look right either.

Maybe the wheels are wobbly because it just landed after a jump. I just read a story on the filming of the DoH series, that almost every stunt car used for a jump was instantly totaled. No wonder they went through hundreds of Chargers over the course of all those seasons.

Pure black is too dark to show up in the game usually, I use a shade on my pic editor (PhotoImpact 4.2) that is one over from black, I can post a pic of the color when I get home.

I need to post in this thread more often. You're doing a great job with the textures and details, MADMAN! I'd go for a textured face on the driver, it's not too hard to make it look good with the room you have.

You guys should do more pursuit races :)
The wheels are wobbling because i hit a spike strip before.

Yes, I thought about tinting the wheels slightly darker. But thats something that doesnt bother me much; can be done quickly if needed.

Have reworked all the small details. The wheels are darker now.
Increased the polycount of the side mirror to look more smooth, also made the mirror the proper :OLM part.

Front passenger windows are removed.
Rear side windows and crossed flags set as :OT part - as well as the side charger emblems, so the alpha channel is properly displayed. This way the convertible option will give a somewhat "clean" General Lee version.

Gave the antenna a small shadow and fixed an overlapping at the door inlays. Furthermore i worked on the damage model - fixed biggest issues with :OC parts peaking through the body etc.

The car is making progress. Finally the duke boys are joint and ready to save the Farm once again... Reworked some interior details, textures and the LOD mesh. I started working on a handling file as well.

Though, have a problem with the driver head ... and i hope some of the experienced modelers here can help me out.

It is some kind of animation bug and it only appears during an actual race. In menu everything works just fine. Some polies/vertices seems to get stucked when the :OH is moving. So it will look like Bo's face is melting.
Have you ever experienced this? What can i do to avoid this?
Again, in menu everything is fine but during race the driver's face is melting.
Help!  :(

Got some pictures of recent state here. Also uploaded a video of the problem for better visualisation. Hope the issue can be recognised despite the youtube compression.

Hi i've had a Loong-,busy Traffic, day drove 145+ miles, not used to it so much.. an did my Dentist drills, an had a Cleaning done to. So it was a Good thing, now About your Drivers, Face, I looked an seen something, not all Rite but.. it Really doesn't matter to me,Cause.  :o  ???

I'm looking at the Great looking General Lee, new Improved Car. An I can't see the Driver very well.
Try not to worry about it to much Madman :}
An,hope maybe Frank can give you a Hand with it all.
I need, um some help in the Index,Fsh. File but, I have not anyone to help explain, what to do. About! Pad 000%%%% means on Mirred textures, for my project, I was.. working on, or trying to. ::)
But, so it's not my thing I guess, trying to fix Empire up, from the Cds.  But using 24 bit textures doesn't work, for mirrored ones. Head is tired... nice pics btw. Pal  =D

Did you check if all vertices of :OH are marked as "rotatable" in Zmod? And wherether the :OH part has the axis in the right place (centered, and just when it connects to the neck)?
Title: Re: Yeehaw! - A Dukes of Hazzard project
Post by: FranknFurter on Apr 18, 2017, 10:32 PM
AJ was faster -LOL yeah but that's my experience, too on that issue, all :OH verts need to be checked 'rotatable', just as a tipp: I place the rotating axis by the driver's neck on the 'Atlas bone' so the head's movement looks more 'natural', if you're uncertain just place the main working axis there and rotate :OH manually few times ... ;)

btw ... love those wheels, simply great - well done Madman!

Nice job on that Dodge, damage model looks quite decent, too! As for the head, guys here make it much faster than me :)
BTW, i remember that Vette '57 by Burnout had the same issue with driver head as is.
Title: Re: Yeehaw! - A Dukes of Hazzard project
Post by: MADMAN_nfs on Apr 19, 2017, 6:58 AM
Hey, that exactly was the issue!
Had to set all vertices rotatable. Thanks guys for the tipps.

Just got confused, cause the FCE custom settings state ":OD part only"
Also strange the menu seems to have a different animation routine.
However, im glad that it's fixed now :)

Been busy with my empolyment recently. So not much news here.
The windows received a little tint, which improved visibility of the windows, especially at the sides.
I decided i want the handling to be a mix of realism arcade. Compared to default NFS4 handling it will be more realistic. One should feel the raw power of this car but also the heaviness and missing features like ABS and power steering - i think i found a nice balance and orientated myself on Geminiyo's 4Lower handlings.

(http://i.pi.gy/09pK.jpg) (http://i.pi.gy/wL3Z.jpg)(http://i.pi.gy/noDB.jpg) (http://i.pi.gy/x4p8.jpg)

Im confident i can resume work on the project soon.

Almost done. Almost.

Handling file still needs proper AI tuning, but else its finished. As you can see in the pics, i have default menu again to prepare the menu files  :)
Another finetuning happend to the model. Although it wasn't planned to rework or change the normals, i tested some calculations. It changes the overall look a lot, improving some aspects.
But i dont want to talk to much about it, since i wanted to see some oppinions about the new reflections...

I see you renamed playercar menu in gas station.Still a bit Detroit muscle feel.

Post by: Cooya! on May 27, 2017, 1:25 PM
WOW... General Lee looks absolutely fantastic... the details are perfect... and so is the body colour now.
There are just 3 little thinks I could find which you may fix if you like:

1) There is a little gap in the rear panel between the wheelhouse and the taillights... its hard to see but maybe its worth a fix
2) The black panel around the taillights is some kind of silk flat black in real life... flat (matt) black would fit a little better than this high gloss one
3) the "R/T" logo between the taillights is not correct on the General Lee... sometimes he has no logo at all but most of the time he has this "CHARGER [>]" logo

Title: Re: Yeehaw! - A Dukes of Hazzard project
Post by: MADMAN_nfs on May 28, 2017, 3:10 AM
Thanks Cooya.
I will try to improve the mentioned stuff. Without reflections the black rear panel might look a little weird tho, will try.

About the logo issue i though a lot already :)
Actually most of the time during the show they removed these emblems just keeping the charger lettering. Like in this picture:

If you look closely you can even see the former "R/T" letters there btw (or view with high contrast).
On the official DVD box set a short info film also states the General is meant to be a Dodge Charger R/T 440 (not a 426 hemi), as well as information about performance (zero to 60mph in 6 seconds and a top speed of 157 mph).
To save production costs they actually used other chargers as well, yes even reworked 1968 chargers were used. But these cars are "actors" and meant to represent a R/T charger.
So, all in all there is some room for speculations. The choice is keep or remove the emblems....since i like these emblems i decided to keep them. Hope i was able to kinda explain this decision :)

Okay, now another thing that bothers me regarding the reflections:
i think reworking the normals did improve many things but im not really satisfied with the edges on the sides.
I think ingame they look too "sharp". Was hoping for some tipps how to properly adjust the vertex-normals to get the edges a tiny, little bit more smooth.
Or is it just "experimenting" with those 3 sliders in Zmodeler (Projection, Current...)?

Post by: Zpectre on May 28, 2017, 8:29 AM
Elaborating on Cooya!'s words, the gap looks like a normals issue. The biggest problem with these cars from MW, Carbon, etc. is that EA had a way of doing things that isn't in our best interest. In NFS4 you have to use the lower LOD and I think they did those lower detail meshes by computer instead of hand, cleaning up afterwards. So the lower detail is often less smooth than it could've been, as it's supposed to be seen only from distance.

There are plenty of community meshes with better polygon placement than an EA car, though usermade cars usually have their own problems (overuse of polygons in other areas, bad textures, bad normals and wrong proportions). Can't blame them, though, because resources were scarce in the early 2000s. The cars of Team RSR, Martin Leps and others took long to make because these things take long to do right.

I also don't know how Reggaeton converted the car as I've never used it nor tinkered with it.

But yeah, aside from that, the car looks pretty much perfect. I like your work a lot, MADMAN! Badge should be easy to fix and rear plastic part is easy to change as well. We're long due a General Lee in NFS. :D
Title: Re: Yeehaw! - A Dukes of Hazzard project
Post by: MADMAN_nfs on May 28, 2017, 9:01 AM
Indeed, the car was converted from NFS-Carbon and this mesh is LOD2 or LOD3 probably. So its not "just" a normal issue, there is an actual gap there. You can see if you look closely to the picture remko cited.
The rear panel has simply more polies (to appear more rounded) then the car body, for sake of saving polies...

No easy fix for the reflections here... i managed to close the gap (so you cant look through). But for proper reflections it would be neccessary to remodel the back part completely at those spots. Not worth it imo, so i guess we have to live with this tiny flaw...
Title: Re: Yeehaw! - A Dukes of Hazzard project
Post by: Zpectre on May 28, 2017, 10:18 AM
I see. Yeah, the cars have a lot of little bugs... Lots of MW and Carbon cars aren't even symmetric, if you look closely. It's hard to spot once the car is ready, but looking at the wireframe you can see it, and other bad stuff like the gap in the Charger.
Title: Re: Yeehaw! - A Dukes of Hazzard project
Post by: MADMAN_nfs on Oct 15, 2017, 6:17 AM
Resumed work on the project after some kind of "summer pause".  :)

I further tweaked the exterior and fixed all things Cooya mentioned in his last posting.

For me it was also important to create a nice cockpit view for the Charger. I did not model the interior by myself. Instead i used the (converted) charger cockpit from MCO and dash parts from another 3D model as base (https://www.yobi3d.com/v/sn0WLKrvNJ/dd.3ds/charger-dodge).
It took me some time to arrange all parts for correct visibilty but im pretty happy with the outcome now. Surely it is not perfect and still needs some texture work, but definitely has more details than the edited truck cockpit from my Road Warrior project.

Hope i will be able post some ingame screens soon.

Title: Re: Yeehaw! - A Dukes of Hazzard project
Post by: MADMAN_nfs on Oct 19, 2017, 4:07 AM
Well, the dashview is a separate 3D mesh/model. The dashview does not share anything with the exterior view of the car.
So, for the interior i have to add Luke on the passenger side again, to make him show up. Indeed i will try doing this to see what it looks like...

edit: Maybe i can also place driver-hands to the steering wheel, although i think this is not really necessary in NFS4.
Title: Re: Yeehaw! - A Dukes of Hazzard project
Post by: MADMAN_nfs on Oct 19, 2017, 1:30 PM
Well, added Luke to the dash view... as expected, things aren't looking too bright  ^-^

A bit embarrassing to see this in 2017... to be honest  =D

Only solvable with higher polycount or bigger texture map. Since im limited to one tga file, there is no more space for a bigger facemap.
On the other hand modelling a detailed Luke will increase the the polycount unreasonably. Besides, creating 3d persons is probably the most difficult and advanced thing to do in 3d design, so definitely not my thing  :P

Im leaving Luke in the dash.fce - you can keep or remove the part easily, using NFS-Wizard, in the final release.

Its okay when Paul shows us his Rosco Sheriff, but your track is in no way related to Dukes of Hazzard.

An update again. I optimized the interior, non-visible polies have been removed. The thickness of the passanger seat was reduced and the radio has been replaced with the original "Chrysler Solid State" (which also reduces polycount actually). Fixed some small mesh errors and shading.
Additionally the exterior view received a lit dash.
Presentation material, like showcase and vidwalls are also ready. Probably the showcase will be uploaded as a seperate package.

Almost made a video related General Lee, but then I kept the silence.
On other hand. Take some disputes. Something wrong with body, or shades. More brutal sound must be - Equalized in sound editing program. After only 5 or so hours, to me, the engine sound is lacking 250hz (or something) gradient middle, and 500hz bass increase. 31hz and 61hz such lower. The paints is fine but must be brighter. Stickers on the body looks too sharp by the edges. Perhaps can be shaded by the corners or texturised by the corners.

Add some 3D improvisation to car's body!
