Title: 'Smokey and the Bandit' game setup - revived
Post by: FranknFurter on Oct 17, 2016, 1:31 AM
Hi folks,
alright, had a look into my very old game setup 'Smokey and the Bandit' again since these days a lot of things have changed as I reworked the involved cars or tracks over and over again and finally the great possibility came up to use whatever cars (or tracks) you like because of VEG's modern patch.

The whole game idea itself developed from an early issue I noticed while in a 'classic' style pursuit:
if another car is being pursuited and you hit the cops enough while they try to stop that opponent, it happens that the cops change their focus on you and abandon that opponent's persecution furthermore (until you have been ticketed). That means, if that opponent was your 'friend' (more or less) it is possible to keep him from the cops' persecution .. or so ...

That is, more or less, also what Bandit's task during the movie was: keeping the cops off the truck (Snowman) with its valuable freight (a palette of beer) =D

As a matter of fact, there were some bugs I never could manage since my knowledge about the game, its possiblities or simply my skills were insufficient.
Nowadays, as said, and being very glad about the recent developments, there are many more ways to cope with certain issues like the game's memory limitation which is resolved by the modern patch ^-^ ^-^ ^-^

One problem I had still: On Fangio's 'Deadly Outback v2.4' there was a bug that wasn't really a bug but it was caused by the sheer size of Snowman's Semi Truck. Racing the track forwards it always got stuck by the gorge's bridge (pic: Snow_Stuck_Bridge.jpg) while backwards there were no issues. All other cars had no problems such as my traffic bus (from NFS6), even though it is almost as large as the truck (pic: TBus_Snow_comparation.PNG). The tractor unit is just an :OLB/:ORB (displaying a truck-and-trailor vehicle isn't to do in an other way in NFS) part while the trailor is the actual :HB part, so the tractor can be ignored. (The bus is even a bit wider than the truck) I never thought that a vehicle's height is such important, the wooden overpass bridge optically is high enough to let the truck pass normally. Anyway, I changed two polygon properties (today!) and now I can tell you - it works, the truck can now pass through under that bridge ^-^
I tried many different changes on several polygon properties as you might assume before - none helped.
All you need to do is uncheck 'Wall collision detection' on the last two track polygons of Block 146 in the polygon properties (left and right side of the track) - that's it .. uhm.. (pic: DdlOutb_v2_PolyChanges_r.PNG)

More pics of the gameplay in a following post, I've reached the upload limit of 1MB already :( :(

Now a few gameplay screenshots:
As said, you and Snowman ARE opponents, that cannot be changed even with Ghostfile HEX tinkering and modifying .. :(

But the task of keeping off the cops from Snowman is quite a lot of fun .. ^-^
Either you shoot ahead and prevent the cops from getting focus on the truck by that or, if Snowman gets persecuted, try to lead the cops off Snowman's a.. as you simply hit them. They will let off of him and .. best if you get away .. quickly!

1st pic. (Snowman's passage through the gorge .. finally)
2nd and 3rd pic. 'Pull them off from me, Bandit' ('wrong' cop cars still :()
4th and 5th pic .. similar .. successful 'leading off' ('matching' traffic cops here ^-^)

.. some more impressions ..

'Being elsewhere' and other .. 'Where are you Bandit? Need some help here ...'

BTW the recent 1024x768 screenies in this thread were all taken on my girlfriend's laptop with DirectX renderer (API115) running here. Also running fraps 3.5.99, runs fine.

Ok that's all so far folks .. from down here in Texas .. C'ya back in ol' Georgia!

Thanks man ...

It is really fun to drive that setup .. while running 'Eastbound and Down' music track ^-^
Hope that someone still might want to do a matching track .. one fine day ..
