Title: Porsche Test Track Leipzig
Post by: Freak-DS on Nov 01, 2014, 12:09 PM
Hey, guys!

Ever since T3ED was released, I used to play a little bit with it. Adding crappy alternative routes to EA tracks or altering little details in addon tracks that bothered me was what I did with it all the time. Since about 2010, every now and then when I felt like editing a track, I began a big project.
What started this was, there was somebody who told me, it would be impossible to recreate a race track for NFS:HS that would resemble an actually existing one. Too complicated would be matching AI lines, proportions, details, etc. As far as I know, except for a medium quality done Daytona, there is no such track for HS.

What I want to present to you now is a project, that is as mentioned going on for four years, which I am going to be working on every now and then, Porsche's Test Track in Leipzig. Basically, this track is a mashup of the most famous corners of race tracks around the world, to allow Porsche proper tests of their cars and customers a lap of their lifetime. I haven't been there personally yet, I will visit it some time. However, out of the mentioned comment that I took as challenge and boredom, I took Raceway 3 in T3ed and started squeezing, bending, dragging and pushing the track in the correct shape. Then, I began deleting lots of things except for the road itself, and rebuild the scenery. I had no Idea how much work that would be.
The track shape is as accurate as it could be done with T3ed, reference for it was taken off Google Maps. Whenever I will make some significant progress on this, aside of RSR and F-Body projects, I will post it here.

As you know, I love teasing you, so I will share these three images with you for now:

Great stuff.

b.t.w. what's F-body projects? F-body refers to the '90 GM cars like Camaro/Firebird doesn't it.Sounds odd for a Porsche freak.

nfsfan83 was not involved in this ;)
I have looked at his tracks and we have a very different style of building them.
I'm rather a co-admin on NFSCars than a moderator.

@noise: with F-Body projects, i'm talking about projects that refer to my signature ;)

Oh I see, what does F means than? F-body faction (Mecha/Azrael) were the makers of those Firebird/Camaro's years ago.

F-Body is the GM platform developed and used from the sixties until the 90s for the camaros and firebirds. The F-Body-Faction is condensed madness centering around these models, once building them for NFS 4.

I used Raceway 3 as base and went from there. Here are some evolution steps after bending it to the basic shape:

If I had used something of you, nfsfan, then I would credit you ;)

So you were involved in those nfs4 Camaro/Firebirds from F body faction than, I had no idea. Your website doesn't mention that. I thought ''F body faction'' was/is: Azrael, mecha, Shake, Kracka, DanR

Pretty much my reaction, my god, that is some dedication to accuracy. Quite impressed so far.  :o

The real circuit is a fascinating thing too, I have to admit I didn't know of it before one of your screens appeared on he SOTD. Once this is done, it sounds like a great circuit to compare lap times. ;)

I hope so, too. What would help me a lot right now, can you tell me what program you used to create or convert meshes to the object format that t3ed reads? i cannot find a single program that is not just a trial that allows an export of meshes into that format.

Hmm... *.off looks quite similar to *.obj internally. Perhaps save as OBJ and then edit it manually using notepad to become an OFF file?

Hey,
did you try MeshLab (http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/)? Very useful program, for free. Can handle lots of formats (including .off).
I experienced trouble importing some files, tho. I guess sometimes there are different versions of a fileformat or some programs handle it differently.

Greetings

Meshlab was my choice, too. All testing I did was with .off files created by it.

Since you've been wondering whats new, here are some more screenshots!
Progress is going slow so far, i've worked on it a bit in the past days but there's still tons of work to do.

(http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/5_th.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/5.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/6_th.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/6.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/7_th.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/7.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/8_th.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/8.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/9_th.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/9.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/10_th.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/10.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/11_th.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/11.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/12_th.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/12.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/3_th.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/3.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/scuba_th.jpg) (http://www.freak-ds.de/projects/ptl/scuba.jpg)

Track editing really is a challenge on this degree. As you can see, visibility is still a problem and sometimes you just go places you shouldnt  :D .

Hey there, the track looks very, very good.
Except for the cosmetic things the track is pretty much drivable i guess? Or are you still working on the AI?

The glitch on the last shot is from the middle part, isn't it? I think that happens when you join blocks that are too far away from each other... visibility.txt does not help there  :(

Also nice idea with the blimp, you used the animated one from Atlantica?

Keep it up! :D

Little advice from my side (i tend to forget that always myself)... make backups consistently. Really would be a shame to loose such a track due to a HDD crash. But you probably know.  :P

Car looks familiar, by the way (so does the driver) :P

Looks sweet. And like a whole freaking lot of work...
