I had a few ideas for fairness of cars' or tracks' rating and promotions:
Rating - I love the current rating system, but I feel like I need some more numbers to work with here... could we possibly try a */10 system? Or to make it cleaner, allow users to select "4.5" as a rating? This would be helpful for me, because I do often need something between 4/5 and 5/5 to rate things with ;)
And the other thing, I did realize that authors can rate their own work, maybe that should be disallowed
downloads- if the same IP that uploaded the car downloads it, maybe downloads shouldn't be counted. I know NFSCars has had this problem with a certain car... PM me for the one.
I dont mind about 5 star rating if it still remains. Whereas I also agree that authors should not be allowed to rate their work.
Okay :)
You don't ever feel the need to rate something 4.5? ;)
alright j/k ... how does anyone else think about this?
I like all of the suggestions you've made. More precision is always good (ten star rating) :D Not being allowed to rate your own stuff makes a lot of sense, so does not counting an author downloading his own work (whatever the reasons are) ;)
Thanks, glad you support my ideas :)
There used to be a 1 to 10 rating system here until a couple of years ago. It didn't work with stars, you just picked a number from a drop-down list.
The stars were introduced during one of the more recent re-styles, I don't exactly remember when.
10/10 stars for this idea! ;)
Thanks Freak-DS :)
Hmmm.... I'll see what I can do about adding half-ratings.
As Remko mentioned, there used to be a 1-10 drop down selection, but I changed it to stars to make the site more modern and with the times :)
I'll update this when I come up with something :)
Oh, and as for people gaming the downloads/ratings... the author can only rate their car once, so that's not a big deal. If more people rated things, and there were more than 2-3 ratings per car, I'd be inclined to disallow author/uploader from rating their own stuff. But with such low numbers, I'll take as many votes as I can get ;)
I haven't seen any issues with letting the uploader count as a download, but if it becomes a problem I'll look into it.
Especially when vote-numbers are low the author's single vote heavily influences the rating ;)
Perhaps it'd be possible to add the number of votes next to the rating itself?
not a bad idea :)
Alright.... I tweaked the ratings system, but haven't put it online just yet.
You can beta test it by changing the URL for any car. Right now, you'll see "/cars/XXXX" in the URL of a car info page. change that to cars2, and the new ratings will be there.
But note, that the numbers will be off. for example:
http://www.nfsaddons.com/nfshs/cars2/Jaguar/1819/
That one, you'll see it says "Rated 9/10" but there are only 2 stars. I need to adjust the DB to account for the new ratings (rated out of 10 instead of 5)... so ignore that and let me know what you think/if you find bugs :)
Looks very good to me, good job!
Wow, Mike, thanks a lot for implementing that! :D
It looks awesome and I look forward to using it
EDIT: All seems to work, except for the XJR100. 5.8 / 5?! on the regular scale. Not that your car doesn't deserve that, NJ xD
Hey mike does this work for tracks/tools yet? if not will it?
Hah, it's rated 12/10... ssomething funky happened there. I'll check into it :)
and it's not implemented for tracks/tools yet... but will be
Okay, great! Thanks, Mike! :D
I was patrolling (;)) around, and realized that Team-RSR's 930 has a messed up star placement for the ratings, using Opera. I am not sure about other browsers yet, I'll try...

Hmm, I'll check out Opera.
Still need to make this go live :o
Still somewhat glitchy with a new install of XP and Google Chrome. It shows 9/10 in text but 2/5 stars :s
FYI, it should all be fixed now... and applied to tools and tracks.
Let me know if you see any weirdness :)
well for some reason on my new computer nfshs is not a valid win 32 operation
but on my old computer it works so any modds have to be in zip file and most of these files are to bid for a floppy disk so i think modds should have an option full of in 1.38mb patrs
Does this post seem odd to anyone else? It's in the wrong part of the site for that kind of post to begin with and the last part of the post is kinda "huh" ?

Seriously man. You need a new brain.
