Title: Your Computer
Post by: MSFT on Oct 20, 2006, 11:49 PM
So by now, we all know what the heck is fueling each others gaming. Perhaps it'd be interesting to see what the rest of everyone elses systems are like, eh?

As for me, I'll post mine later.

Mine was a Fujitsu-Siemens Scaleo 600 when bought. But until now, it got a new motherboard because the old one did't support ForceWare newer than 67.03 with older games, new gfx, more RAM and a DVD burner.

So...
-P4 2,66 Ghz
-GB Geforce 6600
-GB 865PE MB
-1024 MB DDR at 333 Mhz I think :ugh:
-80 GB HD
-onboard sound
-19" display
-4.1 Creative sound system
-AND.... a mouse and a keyboard :D oh and a Logitech WingMan GamePad

All running on Windows XP SP1.

Based off a Gateway 300X from December 2002:
Intel Celeron 2.0GHz socket 478
768MB DDR 266 (PC2100)
40GB Maxtor 5400rpm IDE
CDRW/DVD Combo Drive
VisionTek Radeon 9250 PCI
Intel GME 855
Sony SDM-HS95 19" LCD on the 9250
MAG 14" LCD on the 855GME
The mods I made were the Radeon graphics and the extra 512MB of memory lsat christmas. I will be getting a used P4 soon (less that $50) for the heck of it to extend the life of the computer a bit more. New desktop coming next summer, so I guess its ok.

I use my laptop more: Sony VAIO FJ270/B
PenM 750 1.86GHz | 1GB DDR2 533MHz | 100GB 5400RPM | DVD-RW | GMA 900 | 14.1" X-Brite Eco | MotionEye Webcam | XPH SP2/ Vista RC1
Next upgrade is coming in Summer '07 for this as well.

AMD Athlon XP overclocked to 2.0GHz (whatever the hell that is in ****+ ratings)
ABIT NF7-S2 nForce2 Ultra400 MB
256MB DDR 333 clocked at 400MHz with 2.5-2-2-7 settings
Visiontek Xstacy 9600XT running at 100MHz over on both ram and gpu w/ aftermarket cooler
Western Digital 120MB ATA-100 Hard Disk
Sony 52x32x52x CD-RW

making a purchase of a 7600GS with a Zalman Fata1ty Cooler clocked at 50MHz over GT speeds (AGP, otherwise itd be a ATi Radeon X1950 Pro)
1 GB of Kensington HyperX DDR400 Ram to be overclocked at DDR500 speeds
New thermaltake CPU cooler, to push my old 2400+ even higher

will uprage the whole thing once dx10 technology is availible, and prices of core2 duo come down

edit: os is nLite XP Pro SP2, and my garbage machine still runs carbon on full settings possible for it at 30fps max

Why not go for an AGP 7600GT? There are models on the market by Leadtek, XFX and Galaxy. I can vouch for the performance of the Leadtek card, a massive performance boost over my old Radeon 9550.  ;)
Or you could go all out and purchase an x1950 PRO AGP later this month. :p

Post by: SLP Firehawk on Nov 05, 2006, 10:57 AM
yeah, i want the 1950, but powercolors taking forever to get their card out

im getting the GS for $50, had my eye on the 7600GT XXX by XFX, but that's $150 more and I could just spend another $40 on cooling to get the GS up to faster speeds ;)

Yea, I think I will get the DX10 replacement for the 7600GT (8600GT seems to make sense) and a C2D chip next summer.
What is the next one after Conroe? Woodcrest or something? I dont follow the desktop chips as much, but I know Intels mobile roadmap pretty well.

Wish I could.  The comp is old enough that I can't really upgrade it.  There are two open ram slots but I don't know what type it is, I already tried some ram that fits but no dice, probably the wrong type.  I managed to get the monitor I have now for $10 at a second hand store after starting with a 15 inch monitor.  And I got my 3 gig and the 1.5 gig there too.  I could have used my bros old 20 gig but it crashed in his celeron 733 and I tried to use it but it is too far gone, won't even turn.  Damn if it could, it had some really good games on it, even some that would run on mine.  I know it had NFS5 on it but I would need a copy of the game disk and he has it rght now.  His old hd even had xp on it.  The Cd rom was a deal from future shop about 3-4 years ago and the mouse was 20 bucks.  I got the keyboard for free from my bro and I have two others in backup.  I got the speakers for free.  Free stuff rules.

Welll.... You can find out if you're using DDR or DDR2 RAM @ what speed using CPU-Z. It can be downloaded from http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php. For your HDD, you can use HDTune from http://www.hdtune.com/ to see if you;re using SATA or IDE. But if the com;s reeaaaallyy old, it's probably IDE. RAM should be quite cheap now, Singapore's selling a 512MB stick @ $67 and a 1GB stick at $128. I'm thinking of popping in another 1GB into mine... The HDD is EVEN cheaper. I got a decent 40GB IDE at a recent IT Fair for just SGD20, which is just CAD15.20... You can pop in two! :D

Awesome Will...

It's the 22" Samsung Syncmaster 226BW Widescreen Monitor with 2ms response time and 3000:1 Dynamic Contrast... so the contrast is adjusted automatically depending on the colors the screen is displaying... it's the best $250 CAD I've spent on computers lol.

I'm looking for a cheap AGP gfx card to put into the Compaq... which I'm typing on right now but the words doesn't update fast enough as I type... well... generally... there's a lot of lag.

monkey, where the hell did u get the Syncmaster 226BW for $250 CAD??? thats an awesome price; I bought the 20" Syncmaster 206BW with the same specs for like $350 at best buy a couple months ago!
Great monitor by the way, too bad NFS HS doesn't support widescreen resolutions though...

I was real lucky... the retail price is $379 CAD but I saw an open box demo at Future Shop and the price tag wrote $249.99 CAD...  if they don't have an open box price but they do have a demo at Future Shop or Best Buy or wherever... just ask if you could get the demo for a discounted price... but... you gotta have the guts to ask ^^ CHICKEN! Jk lol

This is my first post; I'm a newbie, and joined because after years of missing NFSIII (couldn't get it to run on Win2000) I'm finally racing again.  I bought the Philiips Wireless controller to use with Vice City.  My daughter was looking through my old CD's and remembered how much I liked playing NFSIII back when my Microsoft Sidewinder controllers worked with Windows 98.  She suggested I try playing it again, and to my surprise, it works perfectly, even better than when I used the Sidewinder controller and 98 (it used to lock up occasionally).

Now that it's working, I'd like to try my hand at editing tracks or creating new tracks... but that's a different subject.  Thanks for the site, it's awesome!
