Title: Where/how to find high poly NFS4 cars ?
Post by: JimDiabolo on Mar 21, 2016, 12:08 AM
I need some high poly NFS4 cars for testing purposes. In most descriptions there is no poly count. I found some with over 8000 polys. Is that the biggest value used for nfs4 ?

Many cars have more than 10000 polies. What about Baardk stuff, he has trucks with a car on the trailer.Mercedes G500 by Stevel cardesign is also very high poly.

In carmanager I can filter on polycount, because in the comments I put the polycount.

May I ask what you are testing?

May I ask what you are testing?

I needed a high poly car to test a race with a full grid. I took the Mercedes G500 now, worked nice like the others thanks !
I'm testing a NFS4 alpha version by Evgeny, the creator of the NFS3 modern patch. http://veg.by/en/ (http://veg.by/en/) I asked him if he could make a patch for NFS4, since both games share a lot of code.

Now there's a request you don't see often. ;)

Do you need as high-poly as possible, as a kind of stress test? I think the absolute record holder for NFS:HS is PRO's 1932 Ford Hot rod that contains 19.500 polys, and needs a special menu setup to keep the game from crashing in the car choice menu: http://www.nfsaddons.com/nfshs/cars/Ford/37/

That is really an exception though, aside from that, NFS4 cars have rarely gone over the 13k limit, such as the Mercedes G Cabrio or TMM's Monaro Series III, which I could not run against more than 3 opponents without the game crashing: http://www.nfsaddons.com/nfshs/cars/Holden/832/

And the news that the creator behind the very impressive NFS3 modern patch (and I noticed he just released an update for that yesterday: http://veg.by/en/blog/2016/03/20/need-for-speed-3-modern-patch-v140-and-v150/) is now working on High Stakes and the possibility that the poly limit may finally be lifted after all these years is quite exciting indeed.  :D

Wow, didn't know this was going on, very good news.Just checked Evgeny's Blog, he improved nfs3 a lot.I wonder if he can fix more issues in nfs4 besides polylimit.

@JimDiabolo: Good to see you are involved, keep us informed.

Oh... my... God. I must be dreaming. At least this *sounds* too good. Wondering (greedily) whether bigger textures might be supported as well?

By the way, there was a... Renault Dauphin, I think, which had like 30k. Don't know whether it was available outside of Tippi's NFS Corner (which has been offline for years now).

Racing with a full grid of Holden Monaro Series III is working :) It's so great to see Evgeny is making progress.

Wow, that is great !   :)
Fully agree with everyone here.
His improvements with the Modern NFS3 Patch are indeed amazing and go pretty deep. So i'm confident he can make this happen.
The car in that screenshot has over 13 k polies. Full grid means the game has to render over 100 k there. So, this is f**king impressive.
Lifting the poly limit really seems too good to be true. This would be an incredible revelation after all these years.

Jim, do you know if this is some sort of hook for the Engine's memory stream?
Would it be possible to increase the overall amount of cars on a track (i.e. spawn more traffic in singleplayer) ?
Title: Re: Where/how to find high poly NFS4 cars ?
Post by: Remko on Mar 22, 2016, 5:35 PM
Oh wow, I never thought I'd see the day...  :o

You should also try it with traffic or better, a hi-poly traffic mod, or try a pursuit race with higher poly cop replacements - altough I expect those should give no problem either, if this works.

Jim, do you know if this is some sort of hook for the Engine's memory stream?
Would it be possible to increase the overall amount of cars on a track (i.e. spawn more traffic in singleplayer) ?
That's what I immediately thought of too, imagine lots of traffic, like the 'rushhour' cheat in NFS3:HP. :D

By the way, there was a... Renault Dauphin, I think, which had like 30k. Don't know whether it was available outside of Tippi's NFS Corner (which has been offline for years now).
Yeah, Grégory Blech made that one, it was here for a short while, and probably NfsCars too, but later that year he asked for sites to remove all his NFS mods, so it was only available for a short while...

You may leave a reply in his blog for that. I started posting my question for a HS patch there. I think if you ask nicely you'll get a answer. ;)

Look at the keyfeatures Evgeny showed for nfs3, that would be great for nfs4 too:

-Improved graphics. No more cars with non-rotating wheels, better textures and models for other’s cars, greater view distance in the rear view, etc.
-Portability. All system settings are loaded from the ini file. No more registry!

I wonder if the polylimit in the menu's is also increased.I would like to see 2 cars showing up in the showroom, so you can compare them.

Or what about the careerplay (who still plays that?).I always enjoyed the moment the visible damage gets repaired. With a higher polylimit the careerplay is more stable maybe.

I really hope some of these things gets done.Evgeny seems very ambitious,he said:

''I'm a 27 year old programmer, and I'd like to change the world :)''

Title: Re: Where/how to find high poly NFS4 cars ?
Post by: XJ220 on Mar 23, 2016, 8:39 AM
It'd also be great if other "hard-coded" settings could be externalized to INI files, like which traffic and police cars are used per track.

Also... more serial numbers? Loading all tracks from the "tracks" folder... etc.

The increased poly-limit is already a-m-a-z-i-n-g.

EDIT:

You could also drive the total polycount a bit further playing classic Pursuit mode as the cop. Your own cruiser, two speeders, five AI officers and three traffic cars. Eleven cars in total.

I do not believe ... step three years without installing NFSHS, when I do this at the beginning of the year see such a marvel!?!? !!?!
I was beginning to "pluck" and modify their cars to have a full grid .... the gods of the past heard us .....

Okay... I just tested the first beta version of VEGs NFS4 patch:

get it on VEGs site hidden in the comments... or direct:
http://veg.by/files/nfs4/nfs4_modern_patch_alpha.7z

Still no widescreen support - BUT:

1) Cars ground reflection in the menus turned on with highpoly cars: CHECK
2) Full grid race with Greg Blechs 14500 poly Mercedes E55 : CHECK

... The polylimit is gone...  :o
...Canīt be more happy

PS: I would have shown a screenshot but the new patch makes it somehow impossible - just test it for yourself

how do I test the patch?
When compressed with WinRAR, an error occurs
Title: Re: Where/how to find high poly NFS4 cars ?
Post by: Cooya! on Apr 30, 2016, 3:51 AM
Why should someone compress the data to a RAr file?!?

How I got the patch working:

1) Had a running version of NFS4 WITH the latest Stockpack included... Made sure that NGlide was selected as the glidewrapper

2) Copied all files of the patch in the NFS4 mainfolder

3) opened the drivers/nglide folder in the maindirectory

4)opened the "thrash.ini" and edited the "0"s to "1"s so the nglide values are used:
[THRASH]
File=voodoo2a.dll
Type=voodoo
[ENV]
NGLIDE_RESOLUTION=1
NGLIDE_ASPECT=1
NGLIDE_REFRESH=1
NGLIDE_VSYNC=1
NGLIDE_GAMMA=5
NGLIDE_SPLASH=1

5) opened the 3dsetup folder from the main directory and used the 3dsetup.exe with the voodoo-glide option (every other direct 3d option works fine for me, too.. with direct x7 working best)

6) changed values in the Nglide glidewrapper (opened automaticly) to my screen resolution and saved

7) started NFS4 with highpoly cars installed and yould not believe what I saw ;)

Thanks for that Info, does JimD have it at his Drop box. Do I have reinstall Nfs4, to do this. Many Questions I see ttul.

Can't get the screensize right yet.The graphics are very good though.

I did what Cooya! showed, but ''in game'' it's 4:3 instead of full screen. No matter what screensize I select.

And after ending the game and going back to desktop I need taskmanager top end nfs4.(just like nfs3 modern-patch b.t.w.)

Edit:

In nfshs.ini I changed:

ThrashDriver=nglide into glide3x

Now the screensize is correct

Just amazing. No more game crashes due to high poly cars.
Dunno where to start... this makes some really awesome car mods actually drivable, finally. It's awesome.

There is still a limitation from the peformance impact, but this reached a completely new level and exceeds all my expectations.
Great work, an epic patch for an epic game. (http://www.basenotes.net/vbimages/smilies/yabb/thumbsup.gif)

Also, thanks Cooya for your experiential report.

A couple of tips

-DX7 mode takes way less of a hit performance-wise while using hi-poly cars in full grid
-You can use other DX dlls by copying files and editing the corresponding thrash.ini file (this is good if you can't record videos/screenshot with Bandicam in DX7 mode, for example)

you don't actually have to replace any file to use the modern patch: just uncompress "nfshs.exe", "nfshs.ini" and "drivers" somewhere else first and rename "nfshs.exe" and "nfshs.ini" to something else (i.e "nfshs_mod") before copying those to the root nfshs folder

well... it always leaves a strange taste in my mouth when someone suddenly demands money for such a "hobby thing"...
But I can understand VEG somehow... and since NFS4 isnīt his own priority but a wish from our community it isnīt that hobby thing anymore I think.

Since NFS4 is still my favorite game and this patch is some kind of a dream come true I would be willing to donate... letīs say 25 dollars

... a lot for an old game that doesnīt cost half the money if you buy it... but not more than 3 drinks at a cocktailbar nowadays so I would be fine with a donation...

just... 10 years ago it would have been sooo easy to get him the 1000 buck. But nowadays I somehow doubt that we few guys here were enough :/
Title: Re: Where/how to find high poly NFS4 cars ?
Post by: MADMAN_nfs on May 24, 2016, 7:27 AM
Yeah, not sure our community, or whats left of it, will be able to achieve this goal. Maybe with some very generous donators among us...
Principally i am willing to spend money on this project. Also a little higher range than 25 bucks - without naming specific numbers. I know its a lot of work to do this.
On the other hand, if he wants to give it up without sponsorship (and thats what he said basically...), it makes me doubt he has the neccessary drive and passion for this game. And if you do something that just pisses you off every single day, it wont work out well.

We could start a kickstarter project and see how its working out. Anyone has experience with that?
Just Vegs deadline is a bit short for that atm.
Title: Re: Where/how to find high poly NFS4 cars ?
Post by: XJ220 on May 24, 2016, 8:21 AM
I too would be willing to donate, but I also doubt that we'll find enough supporters to achieve the milestones.

And I would not necessarily call his decision 'lack of passion'. Should he get back into freelancing and really find the time to work on 'Project NFS', progress would be really slow as each time you start working on this stuff again, you'll have to get into the code again before you can get some work done. This combined with the limit of 2 to 3 hours invested per day will result in slow progress and eventually real frustration because your work does not pay off as much as you'd like it to. And $ 500 is a really moderate amount, imagine how long you'd be able to live on that in Germany...
Title: Re: Where/how to find high poly NFS4 cars ?
Post by: EAO_Lix on May 24, 2016, 12:20 PM
it really is a bitter sweet. i can understand the request for donation.

honestly the only thing i wish the game had, was the test drive function enabled.

Well, that's a development I didn't expect, but it's understandable. I've been a free-lancer myself, I can't really blame him  that he can't afford to work for weeks, let alone months on something he doesn't get paid for. Maybe someone else is offering him a paying job right now, and he just has to make a choice.

Much like the others, I wouldn't mind donating something in the same area as the others mentioned, but the $ 500 minimum sounds a bit steep for the few that are left of us (there might be more than we think, but since we often see the same names at various communities, I tend to think in terms of dozens rather than hundreds :P)

I like this project, this is why I’m ready to work on it for a month or two without tangible profit.
This gives me hope, in terms of motivation at least.

Pity I don't have experience with Kickstarter either, I feel it would help to get the donations collected in a more organized way than what he's suggesting now (don't have experience with Western Union either, only Paypal)

[...] But we need a better way to find out if we can get enough money. At least a better topic for it.

We could make some kind of poll with different cash amounts (5$,10$,20$,30$,40$...). So, at least we could see what the active, registered users of nfsaddons.com are ready to spend.
For this topic, I would recommend to just edit the name, since Veg has linked this thread on his page      ...Remko?  =D

edit: i created a voting-poll, hoping for active involvement...

Thanks for creating the poll, Madman, great initiative. Same for the reply you posted on VEG's page in response to his statement about the NFS4 patch. After he had explained his situation and asked for donations, things remained rather quiet for several days, I am glad you posted your reply to break the ice, so to speak. The poll will hopefully give him a good idea if and how much the fan community is willing to contribute.

About this thread, I could rename its title to "VEG's Modern Patch for NFS4" to make it easier to recognize, if that's what you meant - if JimDiabolo has no objection, it's his thread, after all. :)

endo's Lamborghini Countach 5000QV, 14800 polygons each car, runs full grid and viewable in menu just fine. :)

That's with the Modern Patch, of course. The game does run rather poorly but I think it's being bottlenecked by forcing single core CPU, as increasing graphic settings has minimal impact on performance.

AJ mentioned it runs smoothly in 3dfx mode. Even a single core of a more or less modern CPU should provide more than enough power for HS. The AI and especially the physics are not THAT demanding :P

AJ mentioned it runs smoothly in 3dfx mode. Even a single core of a more or less modern CPU should provide more than enough power for HS. The AI and especially the physics are not THAT demanding :P

Greatest performance I had with dgVoodoo.

Settings:

1) General tab:

Windowed: Centered

2) Glide tab

3dfx card: Other, greater (free to configure)
Onboard RAM: 128MB
TMUs: 1
Memory size per TMU: 65536kB (TMU setting I don't know how to set, I just went with a magnification of the Banshee)
Resolution: 1920x1080 (must be forced now due to lack of HD implementation)
Force bilinear filter: checked
Antialiasing: 8x
Enable Glide gamma ramp: checked
Force vSync: checked
16bit depth buffer: checked
Enable inactive app state: checked
The rest unchecked

The game will run ultra smooth with these settings on my rig, even with a full grid of poly monsters, and it'll look the best I've ever seen HS look. Looks better even than forcing AA and AF through Nvidia driver! :D

32-bit colors seem to break projected lights on dgVoodoo, though.

You could also drive the total polycount a bit further playing classic Pursuit mode as the cop. Your own cruiser, two speeders, five AI officers and three traffic cars. Eleven cars in total.

I've stretched Landstrasse and Dolphin Cove in HP mode with the highest polygon cars I could... The game runs just fine!

I'll do a few more tests and report back, but so far the patch is a success.

I personally like the fact each track has its own cruiser, but it would be nice to make the Euro tracks not use "Pbmw" but a traffic car instead.

I tried testing the patch out but it crashes each time.  Are you guys doing it off a fresh install from the CD? Or are you using the expansion pack installer?  That's the only way I can get the game to run normally.

Notes:

1) Do NOT overwrite an existing install with the patch. You don't need to install the game, because it's portable now. Instructions are pretty clear: copy the Data and SaveData folders from the CD into a folder in your HDD, then unzip the contents of the patch's zip file into that folder, overwriting files when prompted. No need to mess with installers.

2) It's highly advisable to use either nGlide or dgVoodoo. I had many issues attempting to run DirectX mode (6, 7, 8, all of them are bad). dgVoodoo can be configured in the drivers folder and offers the best performance, but requires more powerful hardware. nGlide requires you to download and install it, and is easier to setup, but lags with high poly cars.

3) If using nGlide, do NOT turn on Triple Buffer in the game! It gives you an error and you won't be able to run the game unless you create an install from scratch.

Ok that's where I was going wrong then I was doing it after an install.  Will try tonight by just copying the files from the CD first.  Thanks for the clarification.

I got DGVooDoo for another old game works like a charm for it! Will try with NFS, for the other install I have I've been doing the 3dFX emulation which works great as well.

Dead on tested it out and it works! Did a full grid race with the beautiful F Body Faction's Firebirds can't believe I was actually able to do it! Thanks for the help.

Hahaha you're welcome! I pushed it further with even higher polygons, there's a Countach made by endo at NFSCars exceeding 14k polies, the game doesn't crash! Absolutely fantastic. :D FBF's SLP Firehawk is over 13k, will work like a charm as well. :)

I started to replace all the cars with as many high poly versions I could find but then ran into the serial number issue which I totally forgot about.  Thing is the SNE wouldn't open for some reason I tried a ton of other programs but they were all just conflict detectors and couldn't change the number.  Then I found out one of the cars was causing it, a Ferrari 550 Maranello I guess it had a SN of 0 which was causing SNE to freak out and not open as soon as I deleted it then it started to work fine.  Did quite a few hot pursuits and no crashes or anything.  The only issues I saw were the loading screens were all black which I am not sure if that was DGVoodoo or the patch and then after when I would exit the game it wouldn't actually close I would have to force close it with Task Manager.

SNE requires Windows registry entries. A portable install has none.

yea to get around that I just copy and pasted from the actual install

Hi.

I'm here just to say that I'm crying of happiness.

They are giving NFS HS more years of life and probably stronger than never.

I've testing the modern patch and works like a charm, but my game crashed in two points, so I'm posting them to make sure I havent forgotten anything

1 - Are we still capped in n Hot Pursuit mode? I've replaced in EAs Pursuit M5 with a ported NFSHP2 version (About 7000 polies). Game crashed since the beginning of the loading screen. This is very important for me because I play classic HP in 80% of the cases
2 - A minor issue: Using nGlide I can race in HD Landstrasse made by MADMAN with a full grid of Martin Leps' Ferrari F50 (Over 9000 polies), BUT if I switch from nGlide to dgvoodoo, the same race makes the game return to main menu

Sorry if this was already asked before. Just to prove that I've readen the full thread: I wouldnt mind donating money to Veg for his awesome job :D

Hm... that is not supposed to happen with Vegs patch installed. What you describe sounds like you are running the "unpatched" expansion/stock pack version. Only limitation with the Modern Patch now is the frame rate.

Maybe check your shortcuts ... do they point to the rigth folder? Download Modern patch and replace all files again or start over by copying data and savedata folder from the cd/image.
Try to change the renderer. Test Vegs new NFS4 beta release.
If the problem persists you should comment on Veg's site, since it will be the fastest way to get in touch with him.

Greetings

Totally solved. Thanks for answering MADMAN  ^-^

With nGlide my game doesnt crashes even with 7000 polies' Pursuit M5. Those crashes came using dgvoodoo. I dont know whats wrong with it; it feels more unstable loading cars although it provides a higher framerate

Don't forget to use dgvoodooconf.exe to increase video memory limit when you're using many high poly cars with dgVoodoo.

I just came here (was searching for some other tracks and it lead to this) I was wondering though after reading NJ's comment, Is bigger TGAs finally possible with this patch? Like for example police cars using 512X512 and all looking good? Currently we're limited to 256X256 far as I know but maybe your patch changed that?

i think VEG made something like a high definition support for textures
hey i've got a question to ask here though: doesn't anybody feel the delay when using nglide or voodoo? i always wanted to use them because they look better, but no matter if modern patch or expansion pack, they always have this small delay in mouse and keyboard making it horrible to drive. don't you guys have this problem?

Hi, seems you're new. Then don't use glide as renderer, use dx7/dx9.
PS: You have 4 posts, and 2 old threads revived. Try to avoid that.

Guys with my testing I have found there may actually be a poly limit after all, The highest I got to work (this was both with player and as traffic pursuit units) was the South Korean Police Daewoo Lanos
(https://i.imgur.com/UaplyGU.jpg)
(13064 polys BTW) I have tried to use cars that are 15000-25000 but even though they work in game they have issues, Couldn't get parts properly centered in FCE Center and since they refused to show up in FCE Finish 2 they couldn't be textured either, I also had issues with ZModeler fusing on parts to vehicles this high of poly count, So I'd guess 13064 is the limit I can hit or maybe 14000. Either way that is still good and opens up possibilities to alot of vehicles from 3D Model sites and GTA Sanandreas and Vice City mods and also allows for more detailed lights and lightbars on police vehicles.
