Title: Tails' NFS modding thread
Post by: Tails on Dec 09, 2017, 7:26 AM
Hello NFSAddons.

Some of you might know me from other forums, I was registered on NFSCars as Tails_16v and then on GTRCars which became Driving Passion as Tails. I've been modding newer NFS games since 2010 and had a few attempts at modding classic NFS titles. I came here on NFSAddons because Driving Passion is down and it will probably never be revived, while NFSCars became flooded with low-quality mods. I know that this place focuses mostly on older NFS titles and mods for those games, while I do mostly mods for newer NFS games, but it still seems like the best place to store my mods.

I won't upload all of my mods at once, instead I'll try to improve them and fix all the little errors and bugs that I might have overlooked. Here's a list of my mods:

I have left out my mods that are still uploaded at NFSCars but that I have no interest in bringing back to life. As I upload my mods, the entries in that list will turn from just text to hyperlinks to those mods. But before I upload all of those mods, I must inspect and if needed, improve them. Hopefully, that won't take too much time. Anyway, any comments are welcome and I hope you enjoy my mods.

Tails_16v, I remember you did work with Reight and released an old Skyline GTR.But I never saw the BMW M3 E36.

Anyway, welcome here and happy modding.

Hey there, I remember your name obviously from the communities at both sites you mentioned. Always wondered what had happened with GTR/Drivingpassion - although I stopped going there myself, it's a pity it ended because it was a pretty active place imo.

Thanks for wanting to share your work here, it's a pretty impressive list to be honest.

Thanks for the positive comments guys!

Yup, I remember the Hakosuka Skyline GT-R which I did with Reight a few years ago. Basically Reight did most of the job, I only did the damage and vidwall IIRC. The E36 M3 was uploaded only on Driving Passion some 5 months before the site went down, so I'm not surprised by the fact you never saw it. Unfortunately, as AJ_Lethal told me, it needs some bugfixes, and it's not exactly high on my priority list to fix, so you're probably going to have to wait a bit until it gets released here.

Anyway, my latest project is a v2 of my Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Ram Air WS6 for NFS:U2, but I ran into some problems with it, it crashes the game if you select some of the custom spoilers I've included, which I'll further investigate why are they exactly crashing the game and then quench the problem. Meanwhile, I uploaded some of the files which didn't need updating. Now I'm waiting for approval.

BTW, if my NFS:MW Audi S4 police car mods turn out to be uploaded twice, it's because my PC crashed while I was uploading it. Twice. It's really weird that it happened, because it usually never crashes, and now it did twice, both times while the files were uploading.

Okay, I haven't updated this thread for almost three months, so here's an update.

Lately, I've decided to update my Underground 2 mods. First in the row was the Escort Cosworth, which didn't need any major updating. Now I'm doing the Seat Leon Cupra and I have one doubt. I can't decide whether I should remap it for vinyls or not. The thing is, the mapping is slightly broken and it'd be a PITA to remap it, besides, it's not like U2 vinyls are anything special. But if you guys want it to be mapped for U2 vinyls, I can do it.

Next on the list is the Audi S3, then I'm going to do all the other U2 mods on the list, starting from the bottom and finishing at the top. So If you have any bugs to report, any features you'd like to see added, or any ideas, just write them in this thread.

Sorry for a double-post, but I encountered a problem while uploading a car (Porsche 911 GT2 997 for NFS: Underground) - my PC crashed - the screen showed some funny colours for some two seconds, then it restarted. I'm mainly concerned whether the car is now uploaded or not, because I don't want to upload it twice.

Also, sorry for going off-topic, but this is not the first thing this happened. It happened a few times before, when I clicked the 'Upload Car' command while uploading a car. Did anyone else encounter such a problem?

And since I'm posting anyway, I'd like to mention that I'm working on uploading my older NFS:U mods. I've already uploaded the ones that didn't need any work, now I'm working on those that still need polishing and updating.

Oh, one more thing. If you want to see some of the cars from the list from my first post uploaded here, just tell me. Most of them still need updating, so I don't want to upload them immediately, but if you're curious about any of them, just tell me.

Hey,
your computer does not crash and restart because of uploading something here, thats a coincidence.
It's weird though, you only experienced this random restarts during uploading files to nfsaddons or also at other occasions?
A crash as you have described, most likely indicates a problem with your hardware. Unfortunately random shutdowns can happen for various reasons. Could be RAM issues, overheating, damaged mainboard, graphics adapter or a faulty power supply... to narrow it down you should use a tool like Blue Screen View (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html) (freeware for all NT systems from WinXP-Win10).
Just make sure your OS is configured to save blue screen dumps at a crash: Link (http://blog.nirsoft.net/2010/07/27/how-to-configure-windows-to-create-minidump-files-on-bsod/)
You not need to be an IT engineer to evaluate these reports. Just throw error codes or file names into your favorite search engine, so you get an idea what could be going on.

If the file actually made it through can only answered by staff here. Just make sure the file size is not too big and uploading process is completed (Upload completed page). If you not sure, it should be no problem if you try it a 2nd or 3rd time. I think they see duplicates and can sort them out.

hi Tails, I just checked the submission list, & there is nothing there, so I'm afraid the upload failed.
Like MADMAN says, a double upload is no problem, since we can always easily spot it's a duplicate and simply delete it (happens with SOTDs too, occasionally). Although, since you usually include a lot of preview screenshots with your mods, I can imagine that you don't want to have to upload a whole bunch of files twice everytime, just to be sure.

(Feel free to contact me via Private Message too, if you're having a problem or are wondering about the state of one of your uploads. It may take some hours before I can respond though, since I don't have internet access at work)

I've no concrete idea about the cause of your crashes, if it's your whole system that crashes and restarts, maybe a tool like Speccy (https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy) may help you monitor if one of your components is running too hot, or running out of memory, for example.
If these crashes only happen when you're uploading here, then I'm afraid I can't think of a connection. If it was just your browser crashing, I could imagine it having to do with a file being too big or uploading too many items at once, although I don't have the tech insight to back this up, it's just a hunch. Hope you'll be able to figure it out and don't hesitate to ask for help.  ;)

Fist of all, a big thanks to both of you, MADMAN_nfs and Remko!

It's weird though, you only experienced this random restarts during uploading files to nfsaddons or also at other occasions?

It did happen a few times before, but that was on very rare occasions, and mostly when the PC was under heavy use for a long period of time. In recent times, it only happened while I was uploading my mods here. And I find that very odd.

Like MADMAN says, a double upload is no problem, since we can always easily spot it's a duplicate and simply delete it (happens with SOTDs too, occasionally). Okay, great to know that double upload is no problem for any future inconveniences that might happen. It's not that much of a problem to upload something twice for me, but I hope I'll find the cause of the crashes anyway.

I'm using Chrome and Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit). On my laptop (Firefox and Windows 10 64 bit) it never happened. It actually didn't happen on my Win7 PC the last few times, but I'm keeping my eye on it in case it happens again.

Which program are you using for creating textures? Because in Photoshop (with a *.dds plugin) you can choose DXT1 1 bit alpha, which IIRC has transparency. But it'd be better to check it with someone else, since it's been a while since I've done any kind of texture modding.

Here's a bit of a request to the moderators and administrators: while uploading this (http://www.nfsaddons.com/nfsug/cars/Acura/2846/) mod, I've accidentally uploaded the wrong file. To whom should I send the new file so it can replace the wrong file? Or should I just re-upload the whole mod?

Title: Re: Tails' NFS modding thread
Post by: Tails on Oct 20, 2018, 12:09 PM
I figured out I'd give you guys an update, partially since it's been a while since I've actually said what's going on (mid-August), but also since I want to disclose my plans for the future of my mods.

My plan was to re-upload all the mods I've ever done, well, at least those that can be found in the list in the first post of this thread. (That list excludes some of my earliest mods, almost all of which were NFS:U2 traffic mods.) But now I came to a point when I need help from somebody else. I've already asked AJ_Lethal to beta-test my BMW M3 E36 mod for High Stakes, and he gave me basic guidelines on what to do to improve the mod (massive thanks to him).

Excluding that BMW mod, which is almost finished (it will probably be finished next week), I have six mods from my list that are left. Out of those, there is one Underground 2 mod, two Most Wanted mods and three Carbon mods. The Underground 2 mod I know what to do with (I just need to find more motivation to finish it, lol), but the rest I need someone else's help. The Most Wanted mods are easier, since they only need beta-testing (I know that the Porsche 991 GT3 mod needs brake position fixed and the Shelby Series 1 needs new, lower-res textures that make better use of the space, but other than that, there are probably bugs I've overlooked). The Carbon mods, on the other hand, need performance files and I'm quite lost when it comes to NFS:C performance editing. If anybody has some templates that show which VLT entries I need to modify, that'd help greatly, or perhaps if someone could give me more or less detailed instructions on what to do.

Once those mods are done, meaning all the most from the list from the first post of this thread are uploaded here, I might do a few completely new mods (that will depend on my mood after I finish the mods from the list), but after that, I'll probably retire from modding. The reasons are actually quite simple: I need to move on in my life and I won't have enough time to do mods, or at least to do them properly, and I don't want half-finished work either. Furthermore, my motivation to do modding has also dropped quite significantly, I barely have enough will to finish those mods from the list, which you can see by how much I'm procrastinating to do them. And then there's the fact that the community seems to be falling apart, less and less people are interested in mods for NFS games, especially for the games I mostly focus on.

So, that's how the things are at the moment. I really wish I had more motivation to finish at least those mods that are left from the list in my first post, but I just don't have it, for aforementioned reasons. I know there are few NFS modders left, but I just don't think I'll be one of them for much longer. After all, my interest in cars is dropping as well, so unless something changes, doing these mods will be more of a chore than a task I enjoy doing. I hope I've been clear enough, and I hope you guys understand my situation.

I can understand that creating game addons take a lot of time and energy to create, and I feel it's entirely up to the author to decide that he'd rather spend that energy on other things in his life - no explanation needed, as far as I'm concerned. I am grateful that people want to share their hard work with other fans for free.  8)

I'm afraid I can't help you with the beta testing on the Carbon addons though, hope there are other volunteers...? (have you asked on NFSCars too?)

Thanks for the responses, noise and Remko!

About NFSCars, there's a long story on why I don't like NFSCars, let's just say that I never had any personal problems with them, but I stray away from NFSCars as a sign of solidarity for a few of my fellow NFS modders. I will ask for help on Driving Passion's Discord chat, however.

Hey guys, sorry for the double-post, but I need beta-testers for my following mods:

Chevrolet Camaro SS 35th Anniversary Edition - Need For Speed: Underground 2 - Car
Porsche 911 GT3 991 - Need For Speed: Most Wanted - Car
Shelby Series 1 - Need For Speed: Most Wanted - Car

The reason I need beta-testers is because I'm quite time-restricted, as well because I want to be done with the mods as fast as possible and I want to ensure I miss no bugs.

If anyone is interested in testing any of them, please send me a PM, reply in this thread or reply in my NFS:U2 Camaro project in case you're willing to test that one.
