Title: Bringing my model emergency vehicles collection to life
Post by: Paul Spain on Mar 23, 2017, 12:55 PM
I figured I'd put this on here as well so here goes, For about 2 years now I been bringing my diecast and plastic model emergency vehicles to life by way of NFS HighStakes ,I started out simple enough doing the HotWheels 1977 Dodge Monaco Sheriff,Police, and Highway Patrol, and Fire Chief car (these have yet to be released though as these was made with a crappy base and I'm going to use a better one first) Then I made the 1991 Welly diecast Chevy Caprice police and Matchbox 1987 Ford LTD police series, All while still having to cope with poly limits, But NO MORE, Thanks to the modern patch I now can let you know of a upcoming car that tops out at around 30,000 polys for HighStakes :P. The Matchbox Rover 3500 police.

It will be made using this car.:

It also will have some of the most detailed emergency lights ever saw in HighStakes ever XD, It will have 2 lights made from this car:

Resized to fit detailed insides with a very detailed rotator and even light bubs in it :P. Pics coming of the progress when I get home..Enjoy :).

As someone who also collects diecast cars in the Matchbox/HotWheels scale, this has my interest. The Rover 3500 makes an awesome UK police car (I only have the civil version myself, though - bought it back in 1983 ::) )

Isn't 30k polies a bit much though, even with the VEG patch? That sketchup model has 5300 polies or so, is that extra detail going to be in the lights and other equipment?

Lesson 1, NEVER trust a online poly quote :P, It's actually like 28000 or something without blue lights added XD. In answer to your question though it's the wheels, I find alot of online models have insanely high poly wheels on them vs what they should have, Wheels are well over 2000 polys a piece, The body of the car without the blue lights and the wheels removed is about 12,000 I believe, I'll post pics when I get off duty.

Ok, Here is latest progress on one version, No worry,That small part of the stripe that bled into the inside will be removed soon  ::) ^-^. This stripe job was a bit difficult to do and I couldn't get it to slope down just right toward the front but I got it close enough, I do wish though they had used the smaller stripe like on the Vauxhall Astra coupes they did in later years.

I will also change the wheels as it has been causing FCE Finish and other programs to load slowly due to their count, I guess 5000 or so each, More like 8000 something each :P. These have to go.

Latest work is the HotWheels 1977 Emergency Services Dodge Monaco made by tinkering with Frank's CHP Monaco. I used a unique light for these, The Mars Aurora Borealis as I think it fits well and this light is so cool,

https://www.youtube.com/v/JERcQaAMEmY

Anyway.. The fleet began service as a highway patrol car.:

Later in 1982 (when I was born  ;)) it became a sheriff car first in black&white and then glittery blue&white.:

Then it became a police car and was packed in 5 pack sets with other cars.:

That was the toughest one to do but I think I got it close enough  ^-^.

Then just before it's retirement it was given to the fire dept and issued as a fire chief car and packed into 5  packs along with various fire fighting equipment.

Now that the paint schemes are done on these I'll then go through the ones I own and if there's tan insides on them change these as needed to match before I release them  ;) Enjoy, Also on the police and fire chief cars I think I'll give the driver a diffrent uniform, Maybe the one used on the NYPD Fury for these 2 as that brown uniform doesn't suit fire dept. and city police much as it does state police and sheriff.

Looking great and challenging, too as always ... :)

.. just as a tipp Paul, simply add (after a blank) 'width=640' to your pics' source codes so they will be displayed w/o exceeding the .html frame .. by clicking on them they will be fully displayed .. ^-^

Finally we have the Yatming Sheriff/Highway Patrol car..This one like the HotWheels I hold a special feeling for since it and the HotWheels was among my very first police cars i recieved as a kid and I still have these all  ^-^.

The Yatming has some playwear but overall survived childhood, I had to reglue the lightbar to the roof though.

I also still have the VERY first police car I ever got, It was a Buddy L pressed steel Oldsmobile Cutlass coupe in black/white with a red AeroDynic, It unlike the others is quite big, Roughly 1:43-1:32 scale I'd guess. I was gonna photo it but my camera died after taking many, many pics of my collection and now it must charge up ::).

None the less we've only scratched the surface here, Along with the finished ones there's still many more to bring to life  :D.

Generic no brand 1978 Plymouth Fury Sheriff,Looks as if it was almost trying to copy the Yatming design but in a blue/white dual tone scheme and with a AeroDynic. Also of note is how it's a Sheriff Police instead of Sheriff HighWay Patrol like the Yatming was:

Then there's the 2001 Need For Speed diecast set put out by Racing Champions, It features a 1980's Camaro police car that as far as I know never really appeared in any NFS games but the 1990's Camaro police car does appear in HighStakes.

That's some impressive collection you have got there.

And the Aurora lightbar is quite interesting piece of emergency lighting history. I read all the time, how unreliable it was, and always broken, but damn I sure would want one. =D Maybe because nowadays they are getting different treatment by the collectors, than back in day, used in all possible weather condition by firefighters or local PD. But it shows in the price too.

Also, it's great to see that you have updated your 'road tough' police car. :D

I still remember that I had a clone with POLICE lettering and no lightbar. I am also pretty sure that it was actually a slicktop, without any holes drilled in the roof. Unfortunately one day I lost it while playing outside, and it took me years before I found another one, this time with the usual HIGH WAY PATROL and SHERIFF lettering, which is still pretty much in mint condition to this day.

I think you're thinking of Road Tough, I believe Yatming called them Road Tough but yeah I know what it's like to loose a piece, I remember once when I was little playing outside with my Matchbox 1979 Plymouth Gran Fury sheriff and someone stole it, Later they brought it to school and I saw it there and went to take it back but teachers thought it was their's since they too had diecast vehicles and so I lost it (as there's no real way to mark them with your name) but now all these years later I have it again as well as other variations of that car thanks to Ebay. As for Rough Tough, That name would fit one of the police cars I bought off of Nik (RacingFreak) It's the Mercedes Bulgarian police, One looks fabulous and even better after I detailed it, But the other one was a bit rough, I thought maybe detailing it's front and back to match the perfect one would help since it's was black, Bad idea, Should have left it black cause it hid the wear and damages it got over the years :P.

Long time no post, Well that will change  ::) :P Do any of you remember these 2 1971 AMC/Rambler matador police cars sold in the 1970's-1980's at Dollar General for about .50 a car? Well I was lucky enough to have bought both variants as a kid and now thanks to a talented modeler named RenaFox I can also add these to the list.

Yes, Both will be released soon as game tested, The PA light version is just over 6920 and the TwinSonic version is just a tad over 6000 polies.

It wil be the first Rambler in nfs4 (or even all titles).I have a weak spot for long gone american brands. There are so many Fords and Chevrolets for nfs4.But we also have a Hudson Hornet, AMC Gremlin and Javelin, Duesenberg, Studebaker Avanti, Tucker, Stutz to name a few.

Nice work Paul.

NO! ::) You're forgetting that Rambler is AMC. Indeed the first Rambler to pop up was that Javelin,Who ever made it) and they also did the Alabama State Police one too :police:.

AMC has a pretty confusing history.

By 1955 there was a Nash/Hudson Rambler. In the sixties they decided to reintroduce the car as Rambler American. In 1967 the Ambassador and Marlin were AM cars, by '68 they were called AMC.

nfs4 AMC cars:

AMC Gremlin by Buckmurdoc
AMC Gremlin Pro Stock Grinder by Driven_out
AMC Javelin '72 by Ryan T.
Thanks Sniper for converting (MCO) '69 AMC AMX

Generic Sheriff-Police Matador has been identified FINALLY, Company was MegaMovers, I recently snagged a 4 set stash from Ebay and found there was a white one made like the black &white with a single FederalSignal PA light vs TwinSonic they put on the other white one, It also kept the same original "correct" round headlights and not the ugly square ones,As these were generic and selling for $1.00-$3.00 in 4 piece sets painting quality was sometimes so-so as seen on this white car.:
Large crack in the paint but it did hold so I didn't opt to repaint it.

Intresting how on the white car the Sheriff-Police on the trunk got all out of alinement but is perfect on the other version and even final version with FederalSignal TwinSonic???

Also anyone know of a good Wolsley 680 base I can use to make this 1954 classic from the days when Bobbies still used bells opposed to sirens and had NO blue lights LOL?:

Checked GTA sites and no model so I'm guessing one ain't been made yet.

Must have been the lighting, The OLD British cop car is black. The real ones it's based on was black too but they did have a blue with white POLICE sign mounted on the front grill but no blue light or siren,Just a clanging bell back then and twin PA on the roof.

Hey Paul, nice release of the Matador. Really cool car.
I have a question to another project of yours  :)

What happend to the '74 Monaco cop from THIS (http://nfspolicehq.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=302&view=findpost&p=1513) thread?

Did you ever release this one? Couldn't find it at nfspolicehq. The high polycount shouldn't be such an issue anymore...

It should be there :O It was released a long time ago though I plan to improove it some (for starters giving it Frank's new reworked AeroDynic) and sticking a better driver in it.

Ah thanks,
indeed it is at the "TV & Movie->Dukes of Hazzard" section under the name "74 Dodge Monaco Sheriff Rosco". Must have been blind.
Of course a rework of this car would be neat  :)
The car runs good with the modern patch, but some reduction of polycount will improve performance for sure.

Anyone is more than welcome to rework the body and reduce polys as long as they keep the sculpted body lines (as I like cars to be mod friendly so multiple paint jobs can be done) I will get around to replacing the driver with a better one and the AeroDynic with Frank's soon..Meantime..These 2 are done now :). :

I used the OC from Frank's Citroen multi texture cop car and the driver from the 1978 Plymouth Fury/Dodge Monaco (since he is holding a REAL steering wheel and not a alpha box).

Nice replica of a matchbox car, but a lot of polies. I tried version 2 and got Render out of Ram in Playercar menu.Funny caus it has less than 9000 polies.I don't have VEG's patch installed b.t.w.

These are really cool, it's a pity that there are no cars made in the UK anymore that make such badass cop cars (except Jaguar maybe, as I just found out while typing this: https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/jaguar-xf-police-car-launched )

As a model car nerd I appreciate that you kept the original Matchbox 'dot dash' wheels.  =D Nice touch.

Little bit of history for the MBX Rover 3500 and its civil and emergency variations here: https://lamleygroup.com/2014/07/02/july-2nd-matchbox-ambassador-report-by-nigel-cooper/

Yeah, Alot of what I do now days WILL REQUIRE the Veg patch I'm afraid as I'm tired of sacrificing vehicles to use all over poly count, I have a vast array of stuff (over 8 GB) from various sites and now that polys are no longer my issue I try to use what ever don't crash ZModeler,CarCad,and FCE Finish 2..I no longer have to crunch up polys and end up with slightly ugly models cause of that,Now everything can be left as is and look nice or just have slight reduction so it don't crash the editing tools.

It's what it came with so that's how I did it, I do all my repros of diecast exactly as the wheels are on them to match the model best as possible :). When I get the Matchbox 1987 Ford LTD police series done it'll have the 8 dot as will the Vauxhall Astra patrol car as that's what they came with.

Are them Ford or Dodge Truck fronts hard to tell i think you said LTD's?"

??? ::) Now that would be intresting to see,A Ford LTD box ambulance  =D. They are the Matchbox 1977 Chevy ambulance,The orange/white one was my favorite since it was the first one I got when I was little,Others I have bought off of Ebay and 1 from Nick,I also got a sheriff SWAT team one too but I have to photo it and see if I can map it on the TGA.

I Like the Window on the side is that for the Patients to Scream for help out of?

=D >:D I used the driver from Econobrick's Suburban cause I liked the look of his outfit (I think it's from Attack On Titan), I agree he looks mean and I don't think I'd want to ride in a ambulance with him driving either  =D but no,Those side windows came standard on these as well as Ford's version of the 1970's-1980's ambulances. Thus Matchbox put them on their 197 Chevy Ambulance,As for the tall and short side doors,I don't know if they was standard or a custom order,I have saw pics of the real ambulances with and without them.

:D About how much poly's is it so far,if it matters i know about Veg's mod.

I too use this and it has helped alot,No longer do I worry about polys usually though some extremely high poly stuff tends to crash ZMoldeler 1,CarCad,and FCE Finish 2  :'( but most stuff is fine. Ambulance is 15225 polys so players will definatly NEED the Veg Patch to play with it.

However there is a small issue, The car I found to make this was a 4 door, I easily edited the body in CarCad to be a 2 door but there is still evidence of it once being a 4 door, I need to fix this, CVPI19 says I need to merge Normals in ZModeler to close gaps, What do I do to do that? I tried mergeing Vertices but that makes it ugly or even makes the body dissapear totally  :o. I'm ready to begin work on the Impy Lonestar Chrysler Imperial police coupe from my collection ;).

I only wish they didn't mark the police car so plain (just black POLICE on the hood) and also kind of wish they'd made it out of the 4 door version vs 2, I have a simular quality Siku BMW 2000 from the 1960's that is dark green and has POLIZEI on hood and trunk only, I do not know however if it'll ever get brought to life as modelers have only made the later made BMW 2002,I need the 2000 to make it,But I do keep up hope ;).

It bears mentioning when you guys bring up Freak's VW Golf. MKII's ain't really lost but I've added a interior to this car and I'm doing a polizei version of it based off of one of my old DieCast goodies in my collection. To the best of my knowledge the builder never did any pursuit version of this Golf (or any pursuit cars far as I know).

It has a odd issue though  :-\ As you can see the headlights look fine from a distance..

However up close..

I'm stumped, What's causing this? It didn't seem to effect the white siren light on the bumper, Only the headlights, They just look dim up close no matter how bright I set them,no matter how much more I move the dummies out, Dim.  >:(.

With the lights getting lighter when viewed from an angle it seems to me that you accidently used white-colored rearlight dummies for the headlights.. So may it be that you just named them wrong? I mean "RWYN" instead of "HWYN"? ;)

Nope, they are created with FCE Finish 2 and Headlights (HWYN) There is also dimer orange (yellow) to give that classic cream glow to them, Learned that from Frank, But nope, All is named right as I created the lights in that program, I still don't know why they act this way, If you think you can get them to act right feel free to download that car and let me know what you did so I'll know how to fix this if it happens again.
